Lorde Bashes Complex Magazine For Negative Iggy Azalea Review

April 29th, 2014 12:03pm EDT
Lorde
Lorde has lashed out at music magazines for being two-faced, after Complex gave Iggy Azalea's album The New Classic a poor review following an issue with the singer on the cover.

Lorde wrote on her Tumblr, "bugs me how publications like complex will profile interesting artists in order to sell copies/get clicks and then s--t on their records? it happens to me all the time- pitchfork and that ilk being like 'can we interview you?' after totally taking the piss out of me in a review. have a stance on an artist and stick to it. don’t act like you respect them then throw them under the bus." Major League Baseball tweeted a photo of Lorde with George Brett, the Hall of Fame third baseman who played for the Kanas City Royals – that's right, Brett sparked the idea for Lorde's song.

And now you're Royal. @lordemusic meets @Royals icon George Brett. pic.twitter.com/7BPRW6VYJD

2014 Grammy Awards Reactions: The Triumphs And Fails
Another year and another Grammys ceremony has come and passed. As always, there were moments that thrilled while others made me curse under my breath. Luckily, as a music journalist, this guy has learned how to think like the Recording Academy, hence the accuracy of many of my picks this year. Still, even being correct, you have to wonder what the Academy is thinking sometimes. Yes, I’m specifically referencing the fact that Kendrick Lamar was shut out – ridiculous! But here goes nothing examining the awards given.

First things first, let’s look at the BIG FOUR predictions

The 51 Best Albums Of 2013 - What Made Your List?

December 30th, 2013 6:00pm EST
Daft Punk
Ranking the very best albums of any year is incredibly difficult; there are always misses. 2013 was filled with some triumphant musical moments, though not all of their parent albums were necessarily ‘worthy’ of being considered the best of the year. Because of various factors, this list has its surprises and like any album reviewed, its triumphs and flaws. One thing’s for sure – the top ten to fifteen albums are pretty close to the cream of the crop from my perspective. Here are the 50 (+1) best albums of 2013!

Five Music Takeaways from 2013

December 15th, 2013 1:00pm EST
The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2
Ah, there is always plenty to write about the music industry and the number of trends that come and go, as well as those remaining constant.  2013 was another interesting year, whether merely for its pleasant surprises or its disappointments.  Many observations will and can be made of the year musically and pop-culturally in regards to its artists.  While my inner musical nerdy side wishes that I could nitpick and analyze every facet microscopically, I’ll rely on a Childish Gambino rhyme to express why that’s not possible: “Ain’t nobody got time for that!” What I do have time for is to shar...

Thoughts On The 56th Annual Grammy Nominations

December 9th, 2013 8:50pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Grammys are like a musician’s Super Bowl, even if the nominations and victorious artists are flawed.  I won’t lie to you, I complain every year that someone won a Grammy that didn’t deserve it while someone else was snubbed. Just last year, during the 55th Annual Grammys, I lobbied hard for Frank Ocean (looking back, I have reservations now) while Mumford & Sons walked out with the Album of the Year trophy.  The year that Taylor Swift won for Fearless, my girl Beyoncé was on a roll until the coveted Album of the Year award was read.  You get my position though! This year,  I find myself...

Sound Advice For Five Teen-Pop Acts

We love teen-pop acts, even if often times we're critical and skeptical of them.  Maybe it's fair and then again maybe it's not and I'm just a 'hater', but nothing fuels my pen more than writing about the young-uns and their musical endeavors or lack-there-of.  Sometimes those endeavors are strong while other times they are questionable.  Regardless, who better than me to provide sound advice to further elevate the games of five of the hotter teen acts? No one, that's rhetorical!

Lorde Explains Comments Calling Drake And Nicki Minaj 'Irrelevant'

Lorde has explained why she called Drake and Nicki Minaj irrelevant in a recent Interview magazine issue, following criticism from Complex.

Lorde said in the interview about her hit Royals, "Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn't relate to me - or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, 'How are we listening to this? It's completely irrelevant.' I basically just wrote what we were all thinking." Complex wrote that Lorde had dissed the mu...

Selena Gomez Responds To Lorde's Anti-Feminist Remark

Selena Gomez has hit back at comments made by Lorde after she deemed the singer's music anti-feminist.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine the Royals singer, a self-confessed feminist, revealed she was made "sick" by the way Gomez portrays women in her track Come & Get It.

The 21 year-old star has now responded to the remarks during an interview on radio station Hot 99.5, in which she questions Lorde's take on feminism.

She says, "I appreciate everybody's opinion, especially because I've covered Lorde's music lots of times. I think she is super talented and I think i...

Review: Lorde 'Pure Heroine': Lorde Proves 'Age Ain't Nothing But A Number' On Her Impressive Debut

October 9th, 2013 11:50am EDT
Lorde
Few 16-year olds draw buzz that transcends their ‘demographic’.  Basically, the teen star is supposed to appeal to a teen fan base, right? Well that’s typically how it works, but New Zealand  singer/songwriter Lorde seems to have a better grasp of the ‘artistry’ thing.  Basically, Ella Yelich O’Connor is thinking more towards her future as opposed to playing it safe and assimilating to expectations.  Rather than deliver a less meaningful teen-pop album,  she embraces being a serious singer/songwriter.  The benefit of this is a highly anticipated debut album, led by hit single “Royals”.

Lorde: Taylor Swift Is 'Unattainable,' Not Good For Young Girls

October 1st, 2013 3:07pm EDT

In an interview with Metro magazine, she said, "Taylor Swift is so flawless, and so unattainable, and I don’t think it’s breeding anything good in young girls. 'I'm never going to be like Taylor Swift, why can't I be as pretty as Lorde?' That’s f--king bulls--t."

Lorde later responded to a fan's question about her comments, writing on her Tumblr page, "i think i cocked that up a bit and what i said wasn’t put in context also. what i meant was: there’s a lot of importance pla...
