Willie Nelson, Annie Lennox and Carole King have been handed honorary doctor of music degrees for their lengthy careers.

The trio received the honours from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, and the former Eurythmics star stepped up to deliver the commencement address at the Agganis Arena.

Scottish singer Annie Lennox is calling for an end to violence against women in 2013.

The former Eurythmics star rang in the new year by writing a blog championing women's rights and urging governments around the world to act now to stop abuse.

In the message, posted on her Facebook.com page, Lennox also addresses members of the media, asking for better coverage of her cause.

Steven Tyler, Annie Lennox and Stevie Nicks are among the artists who will be competing for a place in the 2013 Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Tyler is joined in the list of nominees by his Aerosmith bandmate and writing partner Joe Perry, while Lennox's Eurythmics collaborator Dave Stewart is also included, along with Nicks' Fleetwood Mac co-stars Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie.

Although she once said she'd never re-marry, Annie Lennox tied the knot on the River Thames on Saturday. The singer exchanged vows with her third husband, South African gynecologist and philanthropist Mitch Besser.

Lennox met Besser in 2009 at a fundraiser for his Mothers2Mothers AIDS charity. At the time, the doctor was still married to his now ex-wife Debra.

A spokeswoman for Lennox confirmed the nuptials, stating the couple wed "in a private ceremony with friends and family present."
