Amel Larrieux
Sweet Misery
Release Date: 2000 04 zz
Running Time: 17:03
Label: Epic/550 Music
Rating:

The second single from Amel Larrieux's debut album Infinite Possibilities is a moody, slow-paced tune expressing dissatisfaction with a lover. "Mama never told me love would leave me so damn blue," Larrieux murmurs in her soulful, jazzy voice, complaining to her errant boyfriend, "What you call monogamy is lying to everyone." Epic/550 Music may be hoping to expand Larrieux's appeal beyond the R&B charts that gave modest approval to the album's first single, "Get Up," but "Sweet Misery" is so low-key it seems an unlikely vehicle for crossover. The promotional CD single includes a radio edit that lops off the album version's lengthy ending, as well as instrumental and a cappella versions, but no remixes. William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
