Jill Scott’s 'Woman' Is A Triumph For R&B

8/4/2015 8:47am EDT
Jill Scott Makes It Two Consecutive No. 1 Albums On Billboard
R&B has triumphed atop the Billboard 200 for the second time this year! Is it a total change of pace for commercially ailing genre? Jill Scott follows her first #1 album, 2011’s Light Of The Sun with a second one with Woman. Woman didn’t match the higher-flying sales of Light Of The Sun, but Scott’s first album in four years certainly has performed better than most of her contemporaries’ R&B efforts. 62,000 units is by no means “the second coming,” but it’s respectable considering the number of albums that have tanked this year (yeah you Jamie Foxx and Ciara).

Jill Scott wasn’t the sol...

Future’s Best Career Effort Pays Off

7/27/2015 10:45am EDT
Future, DS2 © Epic
Musicians continue to make chart history in 2015 despite lackadaisical sales in many cases. Future’s sales were by no mean lackadaisical this time around as DS2 (Dirty Sprite 2) debuted commandingly at #1 on the Billboard 200. No, Future was unable to move the same numbers of contemporaries like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, or Meek Mill, but his 147,000 units is his best career week yet. Even in sales alone, 121,000 copies according to Billboard, he more than doubled his start for his 2014 effort, Honest.

What gives with Future’s come up? That’s a good question! Interestingly, as Future is...

Jill Scott Leads New Albums To Check Out This Week
July continues to roll on, and it’s now week three of the new Friday global release day. Eventually it’ll be as easy as clockwork for labels, retailers, and consumers, right? This week things are understated once more, with a lack of gargantuan music releases. Still, Jill Scott is kind of a big deal in R&B circles, as is Lamb of God in metal circles. Here are five albums to check out this week.

1) Jill Scott, Woman (Atlantic)

R&B singer Jill Scott returns after a four-year hiatus with her fifth studio album, Woman. Woman follows up 2011 effort The Light of the Sun, which gave Scot...

Top Ten Best Records of 2009

1/7/2010 8:00am EST
2009 saw the release of a number of great records, but it wasn't that hard to nail down a solid list of the ten best. The year saw a number of musical comebacks as well, none more awe-inspiring and utterly impressive than Alice in Chains. Coincidentally their latest release and first since the death of Layne Staley, Black Gives Way to Blue, tops this very list as my album of the year, although my best album of the year choice changed a handful of times as 2009 progressed.

At one point in time my album of the year was the Prodigy's Invaders Must Die, then that quickly changed once Julien...

A Conversation With Michael Poulson Of Volbeat

12/7/2009 11:35am EST
Michael Poulson of Volbeat
It is probably no secret that landing a spot on a North American tour opening for Metallica could help your career. Honestly, opening for one of the most revered metal bands in the world has to do something for you, right? Just ask Volbeat. This one time little known band from Copenhagen, Denmark procured that very slot, and, to say the very least, it is doing wonders for their career. Their latest offering, 'Guitar Gangsters and Cadillac Blood' is steadily picking up steam worldwide, and is garnering the band their fair share of airtime here in the states.

Volbeat has already gone plat...

Have You Heard? Celebrity, She Was

4/3/2009 12:19pm EDT
Celebrity, She Was
Celebrity, She Was is a blatantly honest band. They believe in what they are doing with all of their hearts and want to share that sentiment with the world. They want their fans and listeners to share in the musical experience, not matter what.

"Our music is straight from the heart, true of our emotions and very aggressive," the band says. "We're always going to be making the best music possible that stays true to our hearts."

CSW has some pretty oft-kilt roots for a hardcore band. "Four of our members were in an alternative band that our current vocalist roadied for. We began th...
