Kendrick Lamar Keeps The Top Spot

April 2nd, 2015 9:33am EDT
Kendrick Lamar Keeps The Number One Spot Warm For A Second Week
In one of the least shocking weeks on the Billboard 200, Kendrick Lamar’s critically lauded To Pimp A Butterfly sits atop the charts for a second week. Shocking right – of course not – who was about to stop it? Sales and overall impact dropped, but not too harshly for a second week on the charts – the tune of 123,000 units and 107,000 copies (sales). Sales alone have nearly given Lamar a gold album at 431,000 copies.

Basically, examining this week’s charts, the competition wasn’t there. Yes, there were newbies, but the highest bowing new album – Action Bronson’s Mr. Wonderful, settled...

Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' Tops Billboard Charts

March 26th, 2015 9:27am EDT
Kendrick Lamar Takes 'To Pimp A Butterfly' To Number One
After dropping a ‘five-star masterpiece’ with his sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar reaps the benefits from topping the Billboard 200 – his first career number-one album. To Pimp A Butterfly easily topped the charts, selling 324,000 copies and impacting even more robustly with 363,000 units according to Billboard. The two best debuting albums of 2015 come by way of hip-hop efforts, an interesting fact. For Kendrick, he has definitely ‘come up.’

Kendrick Lamar might’ve been the star pupil of this week’s charts, but two others got in on some top 10 action. Modest Mous...

15 Drunken Songs, Mostly With Some Substance

15 ‘Drunken’ Songs: Music Written With A Lack Of Sobriety In Min
If a poll were taken, likely the majority of folks would state they enjoy an alcoholic beverage. If that poll were to focus merely on college students, the majority would be even larger. But this isn’t about how much alcohol is consumed, but rather about the songs that have been written with drunkenness, drinking, and a lack of sobriety in mind. Here are 15 Drunken Songs. Most are about substances, but a few play exception.

1) Kendrick Lamar, “Swimming Pools (Drank)” (good kid m.A.A.d. City, 2012)

If one gets nothing else from Kendrick Lamar’s hit “Swimming Pools (Drank),” you kno...

Kendrick Lamar's Brilliant Move

Kendrick Lamar Makes A Brilliant Decision Releasing 'To Pimp A B
What is arguably the trendiest trend in the music industry as of late? Is it the liberal use of profanity or the heightened prevalence of sex? While both of those characterize multiple genres of music, arguably the trendiest trend is the surprise or semi-surprise album. The latest artist to drop a surprise album is none other than one of hip-hop’s most respected newbies, Kendrick Lamar.

The release of Lamar’s sophomore album has been very unique and nothing like the release of his Grammy-nominated debut good Kid m.A.A.d City. Everyone knew that Kendrick Lamar was working on a new pro...

Kendrick Lamar Breaks Streaming Record

Kendrick Lamar's New Album Breaks Spotify Streaming Records
Kendrick Lamar's new album "To Pimp a Butterfly," has broken streaming records on Spotify. Tracks from the record had over 9.6 million streams on the album's first full day of release, more than any LP in the streaming service's seven-year existence.

"To Pimp a Butterfly" beat the record of 9.5 million set by Michael Buble's "Christmas", released in 2011.

There was much anticipation over Lamar's latest foray into the music business and it grew more so when the album was released a week early, much to the surprise and chagrin of the rapper.

Said Lamar, "I WOULD LIKE 2 PERSONALLY THANK @I...

Kendrick Lamar 'Accidental' Album Release

Kendrick Lamar
Both clean and explicit versions of Kendrick Lamar's second album "To Pimp a Butterfly," were accidentally released Sunday night.

The follow-up to the rapper's first album titled "good kid, m.A.A.d city" was originally to be released on March 23. The clean version of the entire album was mistakenly released on iTunes, much to Lamar's shock.

It was quickly removed from the site, but not before some lucky fans were able to download it before it disappeared.

"To Pimp A Butterfly" now appears in iTunes as a pre-order, with only first single "The Blacker the Berry" being available for downloa...

Reaction To 57th Annual Grammy Awards Winners
The Grammy Awards are always interesting – at least in regards to who gets recognized with Grammys and who is snubbed. Coming into the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, the favorites were Beyoncé and Sam Smith. After the 57th Grammy Awards were finished, Sam Smith went home with four awards (three in big categories), Beyoncé left with only three, and Pharrell Williams pulled off two upsets, including one over Beyoncé. The biggest surprise came with Beck’s win for Album of the Year. Here are reactions to some of the most notable awards of the 57th Annual Grammys!

'Saturday Night Live': Hunger Games Cast Crash Woody's Monologue, Musical Guest Kendrick Lamar & More

November 16th, 2014 7:27am EST
SNL - Woody Harrelson
Season 40 of “Saturday Night Live” has been notably light on recurring material; this episode, with the exception of one sketch and one Weekend Update segment, was completely devoid of anything recurring. While it is nice to have a tendency towards original material, the best “SNL” seasons have always had a decent mix of new and repeating characters. It is time for the cast and writers to really figure out what they do best and focus on that. If the show was relying on the host to kick itself into gear in this way, then Woody Harrelson was never going to be the man for that job. Instead,...

Why The Rap Community Is Mad About Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ Grammy Wins

Why The Rap Community Is Mad About Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ Gram
No other act received more criticism for their Grammy success then Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.  Ultimately, the rap community was pretty pissed off.   After so many years of rap being under recognized by the Recording Academy, now an act grabs a victory in one of the coveted big four categories (Best New Artist) and the fans are not pleased.  Why the wall of hatred for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis?  Ultimately, it’s not so much about the Seattle MC or his producer pal; it’s more about the perception of rap by the Academy voters.  With a golden opportunity before them to award the more representativ...

2014 Grammy Awards Reactions: The Triumphs And Fails
Another year and another Grammys ceremony has come and passed. As always, there were moments that thrilled while others made me curse under my breath. Luckily, as a music journalist, this guy has learned how to think like the Recording Academy, hence the accuracy of many of my picks this year. Still, even being correct, you have to wonder what the Academy is thinking sometimes. Yes, I’m specifically referencing the fact that Kendrick Lamar was shut out – ridiculous! But here goes nothing examining the awards given.

2013 has been an exceptional year for rap album releases.  Some were hot, while others were far from it – cold as Antarctica. Still overall, there were plenty of releases to be proud of, no questions asked. Below, you’ll find my ‘MIA’ (or called it in) list as well as my top 20 rap albums of 2013. This excludes mixtapes and previously released material FYI.

Thoughts On The 56th Annual Grammy Nominations

December 9th, 2013 8:50pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Grammys are like a musician’s Super Bowl, even if the nominations and victorious artists are flawed.  I won’t lie to you, I complain every year that someone won a Grammy that didn’t deserve it while someone else was snubbed. Just last year, during the 55th Annual Grammys, I lobbied hard for Frank Ocean (looking back, I have reservations now) while Mumford & Sons walked out with the Album of the Year trophy.  The year that Taylor Swift won for Fearless, my girl Beyoncé was on a roll until the coveted Album of the Year award was read.  You get my position though! This year,  I find myself...

5 Artists Trending Up Or Trending Down?

September 22nd, 2013 9:45am EDT
Miley Cyrus
How about a case study of where we think five artists stand in 2013? Let’s case study it up!

Miley Cyrus

Up:  While it is debatable what one’s personal definition of trending up may be, Miley Cyrus for all her illy selected sexual innuendo musically made an upgrade, particularly with “Wrecking Ball”.  Yes, the video is strange, particularly her nudity and tongue-action, but the song quickly rose to no. 1 and might just make Bangerz a force to be reckoned with.  Oh and that one hit she had before “Wrecking Ball” “We Can’t Stop” is still doing things.

Justin Bieber

Down:  I think that M...

Kendrick Lamar Explains His Contentious 'King Of New York' Lyric

August 30th, 2013 9:27am EDT
Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar has defended his decision to moniker himself the 'King of New York' in a new song after it prompted contempt from hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z and Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

The 26 year-old rapper made the divisive statement on Big Sean's single Control, but it prompted a contemptuous response from Diddy on Twitter along with negative comments from Lupe Fiasco and Cassidy.

Now, Lamar has spoken out to address the explosive issue, insisting the lyric has been taken out of context.

He tells L. A. radio station Power 106, "I think it's a case of maybe I should dumb down my lyrics j...

Robin Thicke's ‘Blurred Lines’ More Than A One-Trick-Pony

July 30th, 2013 11:45am EDT
Robin Thicke : Blurred Lines
Ubiquitous summer hit “Blurred Lines” rewrote the script for what could’ve been a horrid narrative for blue-eyed soul singer/songwriter Robin Thicke.  The suave, falsetto-loving dude had a bad 2011 with album Love After War flopping.  I was onboard… well, for some of it, like when he proclaimed “I’m An Animal”, discussed “The New Generation”, and of course the title track “Love After War”.

Unfortunately, that just didn’t cut it for ole boy.  However in 2013, the year of the underdog it seems (see Macklemore & Ryan Lewis), “Blurred Lines” made Robin Thicke the R&B singer that could, and he...

MTV has chosen this year’s “The Hottest MC in the Game,” and it’s Kendrick Lamar, who beat 2 Chainz and Rick Ross.

Lamar topped the 2013 list following the success of his debut album, “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.”

He commented on Rap-Up.com, "It's very important for hip-hop. I love that they have debates like that. We need that. It's competitive. Even though we (are) doing these collaborations and stuff like that and we cool, at the same time, this is still rap. It's still competitive and I'm trying to compete with everybody to be the best."

Lady Gaga Collaboration 'Partynauseous' Pulled From Kendrick Lamar Album

October 9th, 2012 8:17pm EDT
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has pulled a song she recorded with rising rapper Kendrick Lamar from his debut album after refusing to allow his label bosses to "compromise" her music.

The pop superstar struck up an odd friendship with Lamar earlier this year and they hit the studio together to record the track "Partynauseous" over the summer.

The tune was expected to appear on the hip-hop newcomer's upcoming release "good kid, m.A.A.d city," but the title was missing from the album when the tracklisting was released earlier this month.

Gaga has now opened up about the reason behind the song's absence, blami...
