She said: "If I could ever get any rapper, right now I'm going to go with Kendrick Lamar. I would want him for something inappropriate. I'd say to him, 'I'm in a relationship, but I want you to know that I connect with you on a visual level.'
"He would make a nice addition to our cast. He's really busy though."
Lena, 27, is dating Fun. Guitarist Jack Antonoff in ...

Imagine Dragons' Grammy performance left frontman vomiting backstage

March 2nd, 2014 8:30pm EST
Imagine Dragons
Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds struggled to enjoy the rush of adrenaline he experienced after performing at the recent Grammy Awards, because he was too busy vomiting from ingesting the red powder used onstage.

The rockers teamed up with Kendrick Lamar at January's (14) prizegiving to deliver one of the most energetic sets of the night with a mash-up of Radioactive with the rapper's hit m.A.A.d. city, but the coloured dust used to create atmosphere during their strobe-light show proved troublesome for the singer.

Reynolds tells the New York Post, "When we were performing, the red c...

Why The Rap Community Is Mad About Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ Grammy Wins

January 29th, 2014 11:47am EST
Why The Rap Community Is Mad About Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ Gram
No other act received more criticism for their Grammy success then Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.  Ultimately, the rap community was pretty pissed off.   After so many years of rap being under recognized by the Recording Academy, now an act grabs a victory in one of the coveted big four categories (Best New Artist) and the fans are not pleased.  Why the wall of hatred for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis?  Ultimately, it’s not so much about the Seattle MC or his producer pal; it’s more about the perception of rap by the Academy voters.  With a golden opportunity before them to award the more representativ...

2014 Grammy Awards Reactions: The Triumphs And Fails
Another year and another Grammys ceremony has come and passed. As always, there were moments that thrilled while others made me curse under my breath. Luckily, as a music journalist, this guy has learned how to think like the Recording Academy, hence the accuracy of many of my picks this year. Still, even being correct, you have to wonder what the Academy is thinking sometimes. Yes, I’m specifically referencing the fact that Kendrick Lamar was shut out – ridiculous! But here goes nothing examining the awards given.

January 27th, 2014 4:03pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Macklemore won four Grammys last night, but he texted pal Kendrick Lamar to let him know he should've won at least one.

The rapper texted Kendrick soon after the Grammys ended, "You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It's weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the Speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and as a friend. Much love."

Macklemore then posted a photo of his text to Kendrick on Twitter with the caption, "My text to Ke...

January 8th, 2014 3:20am EST
Rapper Macklemore fears many members of the hip-hop community will be angry if he wins a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album ahead of Kendrick Lamar.

Thrift Shop hitmaker and his collaborator Ryan Lewis are nominated for seven trophies at the upcoming music prizegiving, including the coveted Best Rap Album award for their record, The Heist.

However, Macklemore admits they are facing some tough competition, including fellow break-out star Lamar with his record Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.

20 Best Rap Albums Of 2013

December 29th, 2013 9:00am EST
Marshall Mathers LP 2
2013 has been an exceptional year for rap album releases.  Some were hot, while others were far from it – cold as Antarctica. Still overall, there were plenty of releases to be proud of, no questions asked. Below, you’ll find my ‘MIA’ (or called it in) list as well as my top 20 rap albums of 2013. This excludes mixtapes and previously released material FYI.

1) Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2

Eminem set out to prove he’s still the illest MC, epitomized by his vicious performance on the epic “Rap God”.  Ultimately, Eminem accomplishes his task of affirming his ‘god status’, sou...

December 28th, 2013 1:00pm EST
Kendrick Lamar
Ranking favorites from throughout the year is one of the most time-consuming and arduous things to do.  All of the rap songs on this particular list of rap songs from 2013 all stood out to me in some regard.  Are they ordered correctly – most likely not.  Is there complete analysis of each provided below or even a sound reason why they were selected… um…well now… Basically, provided is a statement of a thought, a reaction, or possibly a reason why I though each song was special.

1) “Blood On The Leaves”

Kanye West

Album:  Yeezus

By far, the best track from Yeezus and arguably the be...

Thoughts On The 56th Annual Grammy Nominations

December 9th, 2013 8:50pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Grammys are like a musician’s Super Bowl, even if the nominations and victorious artists are flawed.  I won’t lie to you, I complain every year that someone won a Grammy that didn’t deserve it while someone else was snubbed. Just last year, during the 55th Annual Grammys, I lobbied hard for Frank Ocean (looking back, I have reservations now) while Mumford & Sons walked out with the Album of the Year trophy.  The year that Taylor Swift won for Fearless, my girl Beyoncé was on a roll until the coveted Album of the Year award was read.  You get my position though! This year,  I find myself...

Eminem revisits Marshall Mathers sound

October 24th, 2013 11:20am EDT
Eminem's new album is a "revisitation" of his musical heyday.
The rapper claims his eighth studio album, 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2', won't be a sequel to his 2000 third record - which he considers to be his best work - but will instead share the same sound and "nostalgia" of that era.
He explained to Rolling Stone magazine: "It's not necessarily a sequel, as much as it is a revisitation. So there's not gonna be, like, continuations of every old song on there or anything like that. To me, it's more about the vibe, and it's more about the nostalgia."
The 'Lose Yourself' hitmaker knew fans wo...

He says, "It was at the Compton Swap Meet, my father seen them and I'm two minutes (away) at the house... He came and grabbed me... and he put me on his shoulder and I'm watching Pac and Dre.

"Fifteen years later or so, I get in the studio with Dre and I bring up that same ...

5 Artists Trending Up Or Trending Down?

September 22nd, 2013 9:45am EDT
Miley Cyrus
How about a case study of where we think five artists stand in 2013? Let’s case study it up!

Miley Cyrus

Up:  While it is debatable what one’s personal definition of trending up may be, Miley Cyrus for all her illy selected sexual innuendo musically made an upgrade, particularly with “Wrecking Ball”.  Yes, the video is strange, particularly her nudity and tongue-action, but the song quickly rose to no. 1 and might just make Bangerz a force to be reckoned with.  Oh and that one hit she had before “Wrecking Ball” “We Can’t Stop” is still doing things.

Justin Bieber

Down:  I think that M...

August 30th, 2013 9:27am EDT
Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar has defended his decision to moniker himself the 'King of New York' in a new song after it prompted contempt from hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z and Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

The 26 year-old rapper made the divisive statement on Big Sean's single Control, but it prompted a contemptuous response from Diddy on Twitter along with negative comments from Lupe Fiasco and Cassidy.

Now, Lamar has spoken out to address the explosive issue, insisting the lyric has been taken out of context.

He tells L. A. radio station Power 106, "I think it's a case of maybe I should dumb down my lyrics j...
