Kendrick Lamar Tops Album Charts

3/15/2016 9:41am EDT
Kendrick Lamar Scores Second No. 1 Album With 'Untitled Unmaster
After shocking the world, Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album Untitled Unmastered takes the top spot on the Billboard 200. Lamar didn’t deliver the K.O. that 2015’s To Pimp A Butterfly did, but he did manage a robust 178,000 units, with roughly 80% of that total comprising of pure sales. The next closest album was Adele’s 25, which only mustered 61,000 units. Basically, K-Dot dominated.

Lamar wasn’t the only artist to drop a new album that reached the top 10. 2 Chainz’s Collegrove landed at no. 4 but with much less impressive numbers (53,000 units). 2 Chainz hasn’t been as impactful since dro...

The 1975 Lands Career First No. 1 Album
“What a time to be alive” it is for British alternative band The 1975. Matt Healy and company take their sophomore album I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It to the penthouse, aka no. 1 on the Billboard 200. How do the numbers look for The 1975? 108,000 units, with a healthy 91% of that total comprising of pure sales. The numbers aren’t earth shattering in the context of the overall state of the industry, but definitely respectable.

The 1975 weren’t the only newbies to the top 10 this week. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis settle for a fourth place finish with sop...

Kendrick Lamar Delivers An Enigmatic, Surprise Album With 'Untit
There are only a select few artists that can pull off surprise album sans promotion – Glenn Peoples of Billboard confirms this. Fortunately for Kendrick Lamar, he’s one of the most prominent names in music currently regardless of genre (“the one percent of the one percent” that Peoples writes about), so releasing an unexpected project works perfectly. Fans expecting the literally titled untitled unmastered to be an epic follow-up that plays equal with masterpiece To Pimp A Butterfly might be slightly disappointed with Lamar’s latest album, but those going in with an open mind will better ap...

Ah, it’s time for a truly deep question: What makes a song a song? Plenty it turns out, and each and every song has its own unique characteristics. Some songs are exclamatory – assertive in title and equally assertive in substance. Some are jubilant, bursting with the exuberance of sharing “joy to the world” and earning a permanent spot in listener’s hearts. Others ask questions in their title and within their lyrics.

So are songs that ask questions questionable themselves? They could be, but ultimately the songs in question simply inquire, sometimes so inquisitively that a series of qu...
