Lacuna Coil is an Italian gothic metal band from Milan. Formed in 1994, the group has had two name changes having previously been known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal and was inspired by the combination of gothic imagery and music. The members have been known, musically, for composing midtempo songs consisting of prominent guitar lines and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies to help create a melodic, detached sound. Much of the band's recent material, however, sees a heavier and more down-tuned style, featuring a more distinct bass line and a higher mixing of the guitars within the songs.

Lacuna Coil released a self-titled EP through Century Media in 1998. It was followed in 1999 by their full-length debut, “In a Reverie.” A second EP, “Half-Life” was issued in 2000 featuring five songs. Their 2001 album “Unleashed Memories” followed.

The band was in for a change for the better when its breakthrough album, “Comalies” was released in 2002 receiving high reviews from the metal world. The first single from “Comalies,” “Heaven's a Lie,” began to receive radio and media attention, pulling the band into North America's musical mainstream.

“Karmacode,” their fourth studio album, was released in 2006 and debuted at #28 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. It also reached #1 on the Independent Albums chart. In 2009 they released “Shallow Life” which again topped the Independent Albums chart and reached #16 on the Billboard 200.
