King Sunny AdeMaster Guitarist, Vol. 4 Label: African Sounds Rating: ![]() |
While many King Sunny Ade fans first heard the master Nigerian guitarist on landmark '80s albums like JuJu Music, listeners who stuck around soon discovered recordings of his dating back to the late '60s. Leaner and a bit rawer sounding than those breakthrough Mango discs, the many early tracks Ade cut with his Green Spot Band already were full of the smooth and bubbly syncopation the guitarist later became famous for: a loose weave of guitar lines, percussion, and vocal harmonies all moved along by a gentle but assured rhythmic pulse. And while such Mango titles like Aura found Ade dipping into the electronics bag for textural variety, the mix on this early-'70s collection achieves an other worldly sound within the confines of its highly varied and fertile acoustic framework. Ade also shows off the wide scope of juju music with some Spanish-inspired guitar licks on the strangely titled "Chief Lekah Salami" and a bit of blues comping on the regal "Prince Adesanya." Simultaneously sounding tight yet off-the-cuff, this superb album of vintage material offers plenty of sonic treats atop some of the most supple and infectious beats around.
