Ledisi's Release Party A Big Hit; New Album, 'Turn Me Loose' Out Now

8/26/2009 11:22am EDT
Ledisi New Album Turn Me Loose
The release party for Ledisi's new album, "Turn Me Loose", was nothing like what I thought it would be. I expected a room full of pretentious sycophants, laughing too loudly at jokes that weren't that funny, soaking in each others' smugness. But fortunately, I was proven wrong. The venue was nice enough - it was held in the West Village at Le Poisson Rouge. The name of the establishment might suggest a plush atmosphere, but it was not like that at all.

The party was held in a very dark room with a stage, a bar and of course a VIP section. Gritty, but chic. There were a sizable amount of...

'American Idol' Recap: Random Thoughts And The Grades On Disco Night

4/22/2009 9:42am EDT
American Idol
Wow, is this "American Idol" or "Hell's Kitchen"? Seacrest comes out straight from the Gates of Hell at the top in front of a wall of flame and brimstone. Whose idea was that?

Nice of Simon to muster a smile after last week's snubbing and repeated hints at leaving the show very soon. I guess $30+ million is worth showing a few teeth for.

There have been drunken resort conga lines that moved more gracefully than the Idols got off the stage tonight. Move to your right after Seacrest is done talking - shouldn't be that hard to rehearse.

Wow, so somebody figured out that if w...

Songs We Never Want To Hear Again On 'American Idol'

1/27/2009 10:04am EST
American Idol
With the countless amounts of songs floating around out there, and with more and more artists allowing American Idol to use their music, why are some of the show's contestants content to trot out the same old songs that have already been done to death? And why do some Idol hopefuls insist on choosing songs that are all wrong for their vocal range or style?

According to the judges, song selection is half the battle. You could have the voice of an angel, but if you're treating Simon and the gang to "Unbreak My Heart" for the millionth time, chances are they won't be jumping out of their...

No More Elgin Lumpkin Or Georgios Panayioutous: Celebrities Who Changed Their Names

7/21/2008 10:43am EDT
Marilyn Monroe was originally christened Norma Jean. Archibald Leach opted for the more debonair nom de guerre Cary Grant. At the age of 10, musical prodigy Steveland Morris was dubbed (by Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.) "Little Stevie Wonder." These aren't the only celebrities who bid farewell to the names bestowed upon them in infancy; among those in the public eye, adopting a more star-worthy moniker seems to be the rule, not the exception.

Stage Names

Where stage names are concerned, some stars keep it succinct. Musicians Cher and Seal shortened their names from Cherilyn and ...
