25 Best R&B Albums Of 2013

December 27th, 2013 6:30pm EST
It truly saddens me to see R&B, a personal favorite style of music, in a state of uncertainty.  2013 found the numbers of R&B down considerably, a trend that is consistent year in and year out. Save for a select few commercial bright spots (led by an unexpected Beyoncé album), R&B only dented the charts. Even so, finding 25 albums with some significance wasn’t difficult to do.  Sure, some of the lowest ranked albums have their flaws, but each has some reason for being selected.  Enjoy!

1) Janelle Monáe - The Electric Lady
Bad Boy

In a world where R&B and soul music have cooled off consid...

December 19th, 2013 10:45pm EST
Beyoncé tops the Billboard 200 chart with her fifth studio album, the self-titled Beyoncé.  This is huge news, considering the week was initially expected to be a bit slower with Garth Brooks, R. Kelly, and Childish Gambino stealing the notable headlines. Released just Friday, December 13 exclusively to iTunes (CDs are on their way save for Target), Beyoncé not only scores her fifth consecutive no. 1 album, but also her biggest sales week with 617,000 copies sold.  Billboard earlier reported that Beyoncé had the largest selling sales week for an iTunes album.   Compare it to the opening wee...

Beyonce's Self-Titled Album Makes Chart History, R. Kelly's 'Black Panties Debuts' At #4

December 19th, 2013 8:44am EST
Beyonce is the first woman to hit number one on the Billboard charts with her first five studio albums. Her 14-song, 17-music video compilation that dropped unexpectedly on Dec. 13, sold 617,000 copies in its first week.

"Beyonce" surpasses her 2006 album "B'Day," which sold 541,000 its first week. The pop star's latest project is currently only available via iTunes. A physical copy will be available from retailers between Dec. 18 and 20.

Beyonce also sets the record for the highest sales by a female artist in 2013, as well as the year's fourth-biggest sales week overall, just behind Drak...

'Black Panties' Review: R. Kelly Sounds Exceptional Vocally But Goes Overboard Sensually

December 10th, 2013 11:30am EST
R.Kelly Black Panties
R. Kelly sounds exceptionally vocally on Black Panties, goes overboard sensually.

R. Kelly has a compelling argument for the title of the “King of R&B”, easily.  For years and years, the sensually driven R&B singer has captivated audiences with his R- (and sometimes X-) rated brand of contemporary soul, ultimately epitomizing the urban sound.  Like many of his contemporaries and other artists he’s influenced, Kelly’s sales have taken a tumble from their glory days – the plight that is R&B music these days. Kelly’s previous two albums consisted of brand new material, but found the singer r...

He tells Britain's The Guardian newspaper, "I met my match when I met her. She's not afraid to just do themselves and not try to do anyone else (sic)...

R. Kelly: Chris Brown is strong

December 6th, 2013 12:20pm EST
Chris Brown
R. Kelly thinks Chris Brown is a "strong individual" and has likened him to Martin Luther King.
The 'Black Panties' singer said he can empathise with the R&B star, who is currently undergoing a court ordered 90-day stint at a live-in rehabilitation center to focus on his anger issues, because he's attempting to change.
R. Kelly said: "I only feel sorry for weak people. And mostly what I've come to find is that the weak people are the ones that are the haters.
"The ones that's talking about Chris Brown, or R. Kelly, or anybody that's successful? I feel sorry for them, not Chris Brown, bec...

Ranking R. Kelly's Albums Since The New Millennium

December 4th, 2013 8:20pm EST
R.Kelly Black Panties
On December 10th, R. Kelly will release what seems to be the return of ‘nasty’ R. Kelly with album Black Panties. Kelly is easily among R&B’s most preeminent artists. Sure, his sales have falling off much like his contemporaries, but no one can deny the salacious singer/songwriter has a long and illustrious career. This particular post won’t discuss Kelly’s earlier successes with tracks like “Bump and Grind” or his Grammy-winning track “I Believe I Can Fly”, but will instead focus on his post- new millennial success. The early part of the millennium was kind to R. Kelly, much like it was to...

November 28th, 2013 3:10am EST
R. Kelly
R&B star R. Kelly is desperate to get his hands on recordings his late mother may have made at the height of her career as a club singer in Chicago, Illinois, but he fears his stepfather will never part with them.

The I Believe I Can Fly hitmaker tells Rolling Stone magazine his mum Joanne was "a hell of a singer" who would floor people in the clubs and churches of his hometown with her talent.

He says, "She did all of Aretha's songs, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan. Her band was called the Six Pak, because there were seven of them."

Kelly fears there are no recordings of his mum in existence,...

Justin Bieber Releases 'PYD' For #MusicMondays

November 18th, 2013 1:07pm EST
Justin Bieber
Can you believe it's been seven weeks of #MusicMonday already? Justin Bieber released the seventh tune in his weekly social media project this morning, offering up PYD with R. Kelly.

While the new song is about girls, just as all of the other ones have been, at least he is singing about being with one, rather than losing one… and with R. Kelly around, you know the song is about getting physical.

The song's acronym stands for "put you down," which is more of a euphemism for sex and less a term for euthanization. In the tune Bieber sings, "From the door to the wall/Coffee table, girl get ...

Lady Gaga Simulates Sex With R. Kelly During 'SNL' Performance

November 17th, 2013 2:01pm EST
Lady Gaga
What else can Lady Gaga do to shock an audience? Showing no signs of running out of ideas, Lady Gaga stunned live TV viewers on Saturday night by simulating sex with R. Kelly.

While guest hosting Saturday Night Live, the pop star performed Do What U Want with the soul singer and during their performance she pretended to give Kelly oral sex. Our guess is she needs to keep up with Miley Cyrus.

Gaga also poked fun at the controversy linked to her alleged song similarities to Madonna by performing Born This Way as the Material Girl's Express Yourself in a skit about an album of awful cover ve...

R. Kelly's aides insist hooded singer at Louisiana party was for real

October 29th, 2013 4:10am EDT
R. Kelly
The drama surrounding R. Kelly's alleged no-show at a party in Louisiana on Saturday night (26Oct13) has just taken another bizarre turn - the soul singer's representative insists the hitmaker was the performer fans mistook for a local impersonator.

Concertgoers who booed the lip-syncing man offstage at the gig in Monroe are demanding refunds, but now Kelly's aides are insisting the performer was the real thing.

It appears even promoter Cedric Johnson was left confused - he initially stated he "got duped" over the show, but has since denied he made the remark.

Johnson has promised to exp...

R. Kelly fans duped?

October 29th, 2013 4:10am EDT
R. Kelly
R. Kelly fans are demanding a refund claiming an impersonator appeared in his place at a concert.
The 'Bump 'N' Grind' singer was scheduled to appear in Louisiana, US, this weekend, but eyewitnesses claim the man who took to the stage three hours after the advertised time was not R. Kelly himself.
Some sources suggest it was an impersonator called R. Jelly, who is said to have lip-synched to Kelly's tracks, before being booed off stage.
One female fan who was at the show said: "The advertisement online through Ticketmaster said that it was a Ced's All Black Affair and R. Kelly performing l...

Thoughts: Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly, 'Do What U Want'

October 28th, 2013 9:21pm EDT
Lady Gaga Artpop
Gaga strikes gold on ARTPOP’s second single “Do What U Want”: I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t applauding too much over Lady Gaga’s first single “Applause” from her upcoming studio album ARTPOP due November 11.  It was merely ‘good’ in my opinion, but just didn’t stack up to juggernauts like “Poker Face”, “Bad Romance” or her numerous hit singles.  Believe me, I wanted to be ‘gaga’ for Gaga, but “Applause” just wasn’t enough.  But fear not fellow Gaga super fans – second single “Do What U Want” easily atones for any un-Gaga-ness that made “Applause” too safe.  This ladies and gentle...

Lady Gaga is responding to critics by giving them a larger platform: she re-posted several common critiques on Twitter in the build-up to the release of her single with R. Kelly, Do What U Want.

She wrote on Sunday, "LADY GAGA IS FAT NOW! #DoWhatUWantWithMyBody," with an unflattering photo of her in one of her meat costume.

Lady Gaga then tweeted a photo of her and Madonna side-by-side, "LADY GAGA IS A REDUCTIVE MADONNA COPY! SHE'S OVER NOW! #WriteWhatUWant #SayWhatUWantBoutMe #ImNotSorry."

Then she posted the infamous picture people claimed as proof she was really a man. She wrote, "LAD...

The singer built the home way back in 1997 with a $3.5 million mortgage. As Kelly's music career began to struggle, his bank was forced to foreclose on the mortgage in 2011 when he failed to make a payment in over a year.

According to TMZ, Kelly tried to sell the house at the $1.6 million mark to pay off the mortgage, but was unable to find a buyer. The bank finally took the home and auctioned it off Monday, where it was finally sold for $950,000.

January 4th, 2013 3:43pm EST
R. Kelly
R&B star R. Kelly has released a song in tribute to the victims of last month's Connecticut massacre and vowed to donate the proceeds to the devastated families.

Suspected gunman Adam Lanza, 20, opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on December 14th, killing 26 people before allegedly turning the weapon on himself.

June 29th, 2012 12:55pm EDT
R Kelly
R. Kelly's autobiography "Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me" comes out this week with one glaring omission: there's no mention of his infamous sex tape, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

In February 2002, a sex tape was delivered anonymously to the Sun-Times' offices. They handed it to police because it seemed an underage female appeared on it. Kelly had to go to court, but he was acquitted after the judge ruled that the prosecution could not introduce as evidence photographs found on a digital camera during a raid at the singer's home in Davenport, Florida.

The singer had vowed to detail ...

He picked up a microphone moments later, while still in the cordoned-off area and partly hidden from view, and belted out a rendi...

The X Factor Recap: Stars Join The Contestants In A Ludicrous Finale

December 22nd, 2011 9:36am EST
X-Factor Finale
There have been a lot of stupid ideas on TV: AfterMASH, giving Christopher Moynihan a second series, that dancing show where Paula Abdul stood on a huge globe, but last night may have been the biggest brainfart in the history of television – having the contestants stop their performances to introduce a duet with an established star.

Not only was this move distracting and off-putting, but it totally undermined the point of the competition. These are supposed to be discovered talents, not established stars doing duet performances, and that’s exactly what this move made them seem like.
