Writer's Viewpoint: Disputing An Iconic Song List

January 30th, 2009 2:14pm EST
Beatles
It takes a cataclysmic event to derail Overrated/Underrated from its usual Friday spot. Currently the Oscars have been serving as that disruptive force, but this week interruption comes from the most unlikely source: a sports columnist from the Kansas City Star.

This is because Joe Posnanski has suggested on his blog that we stop voting artists into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame and shift our focus to Hall-Worthy songs. Songs he deems "Iconic". His criterion for including a song on the ballot is that it be "A song that represents a set of beliefs or a way of life. So, I see these s...

Rock icon Joan Jett has blasted Britney Spears for covering her track I Love Rock N' Roll - because she isn't convinced the pop star is a fan of rock music.

The 1970s rocker, who recorded the track in 1982, is confused by the star's choice to cover her song in 2002, and admits she has never even taken the time to listen to her version of the track.

She says, "I've never even heard Britney's version. I mean, I've obviously heard about it, but I never understood that whole idea.

"I mean, people usually cover a song that says something about them, but I doubt she loves rock 'n' ...

CBGB Fans Protest Outside Defunct Rock Venue

April 22nd, 2008 3:10pm EDT
Blondie
Angry music fans protested outside New York's new John Varvatos store last week - because the clothing store had taken the place of punk mecca CBGB. The East Village live music venue closed its doors in 2006 after CBGB boss Hilly Kristal lost a lease battle with his landlords.

The space is now shared by rock art gallery Morrison Hotel and designer Varvatos' new clothing store.

But die-hard devotees of the club - famous for launching the careers of bands like the Ramones and Blondie - aren't happy with the choice of new tenants and stormed the velvet ropes at Varvatos' VH1 Save the...

All-Girl Four Piece The Hedrons Have Classic Chick-Rock Sound

The Hedrons
Granted, Scotland is best known for its bagpipes and teary-eyed sad bastard music. But, let's get one thing straight: Glasgow's The Hedrons don't cry; and the only pipes in this band are on lead-singer Tippi. Seriously, what you see is what you get here – four rough-neck chicks belting out loud, blustering, bar music. Of course, these no-frills femme fatales follow in the footsteps of the much more testosterone-dominated Stooges, or the slipshod pop punk of the Ramones. But we can certainly hear some of that soaring, chick-empowerment of Joan Jett or the slop-pop of Veruca Salt, too. And wi...
