Writer's Viewpoint: Disputing An Iconic Song List

January 30th, 2009 2:14pm EST
Beatles
It takes a cataclysmic event to derail Overrated/Underrated from its usual Friday spot. Currently the Oscars have been serving as that disruptive force, but this week interruption comes from the most unlikely source: a sports columnist from the Kansas City Star.

This is because Joe Posnanski has suggested on his blog that we stop voting artists into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame and shift our focus to Hall-Worthy songs. Songs he deems "Iconic". His criterion for including a song on the ballot is that it be "A song that represents a set of beliefs or a way of life. So, I see these s...

Going through barely-there towns and the desert, the road is full of possibilities (as well as seedy hotels and exorbitant gas prices). What makes the drive go by quicker? Music. It's essential for any kind of driving - whether you're on your way to the grocery store or to visit your friend's summer place up north. It's important that your playlists and CDs feature a mix of your favorite songs, and the music you pick can set the theme of your entire trip.

Here are just a few songs to add to your ...

Ashlee Simpson
March 2008 will see the release of Ashlee Simpson's third album "Bittersweet World", which she described to Cosmo Girl as a, "fun party album," that's, "silly and quirky". But what does Simpson listen to when she's throwing a party, and what does she do for fun or when she's feeling silly? Starpulse found out by asking the pop star herself, as well as what she thinks about the high standards of beauty set by the media and its affects on women everywhere.

You said in one interview that one thing you love about performing is seeing the joy in people's faces and seeing them sing along to ...

All-Girl Four Piece The Hedrons Have Classic Chick-Rock Sound

July 2nd, 2007 5:00pm EDT
The Hedrons
Granted, Scotland is best known for its bagpipes and teary-eyed sad bastard music. But, let's get one thing straight: Glasgow's The Hedrons don't cry; and the only pipes in this band are on lead-singer Tippi. Seriously, what you see is what you get here – four rough-neck chicks belting out loud, blustering, bar music. Of course, these no-frills femme fatales follow in the footsteps of the much more testosterone-dominated Stooges, or the slipshod pop punk of the Ramones. But we can certainly hear some of that soaring, chick-empowerment of Joan Jett or the slop-pop of Veruca Salt, too. And wi...
