| Jefferson Airplane Studio Rehearsels 1967 & Fillmore West 10/26/68 Release Date: 2003 Label: DT Productions Rating: ![]() |
Sure this is a bootleg; the portion of the title that's misspelled "Studio Rehearsels" is a broad enough hint of that. And certainly, it's for the hardcore Jefferson Airplane fan, especially since concert performances of most of the songs on the larger portion of the CD -- devoted to a live recording at the Fillmore West on October 26, 1968 -- are available in good-quality live versions recorded around the same time on the official releases Bless Its Pointed Little Head and Live at the Fillmore East. Nonetheless, for a bootleg, the sound quality is excellent. And while these particular concert versions aren't revelatory if you have much of the abundant live late-'60s Airplane flying around on official and unofficial releases, they're good ones, including some of their most popular numbers, like "Fat Angel," "Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit," "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon," and "White Rabbit." "The House at Pooneil Corners" is the only live cut that doesn't show up on the aforementioned Bless Its Pointed Little Head and Live at Fillmore East, and it's a fine rendition, with the expected trademark Airplane harmonies/vocal tradeoffs. Unfortunately, the "studio rehearsal" of "Martha" is an instrumental track without vocals, though the fidelity is very good (as is the playing). Rounding out the set is the sole other number taken from this 1967 studio rehearsal, a whopping 24-minute version of "Spare Chaynge." While that's likewise in stellar fidelity, it's really too long for a psychedelic jam that tried the patience of many listeners even in its official nine-minute arrangement on After Bathing at Baxter's.
