| Jefferson Airplane Thirty Seconds Over Winterland [Japan 2006] Release Date: 2006 07 28 Label: BMG Japan Rating: ![]() |
The Japanese remastering of Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is amazing to hear, Papa John Creach's fiddle and Jorma Kaukonen's lead guitar sounding like they're in the room with you, and the vocals by Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Kaukonen and co. take on an intimacy in their impact that belies the arena origins of these recordings. In short, the sound is very close and crisp, and the vocals and the playing achieve a visceral impact only hinted at on the original LP -- there's a profound, almost poignant beauty to the mix of voices on "Have You Seen the Saucers," "When the Earth Moves Again," and the middle section of "Crown of Creation," while Slick's vocal on "Milk Train" radiates pure energy at point-blank range. This release is an up-close-and-personal reminder of the impact that the original LP had when it surfaced in early 1973, only better; now you can revel in the layered guitars of Kaukonen and Kantner, and let Jack Casady's bass just wash over you in massive waves, nowhere more so than on the rocking finale "Twilight Double Leader," all crunchy, grinding, soaring, and driving rock & roll with some nice harmony flourishes -- even in their dying days as a band, the Airplane were putting on tremendous performances, hearing this edition of it will make you feel lucky all over again that it's here to enjoy and absorb. The mini-LP package also includes a really cool reproduction of the original, customized inner-sleeve for the album, containing the full credits for the performance and the release.
