Pop superstar Beyonce has hailed late soul legend Etta James as "one of the greatest vocalists of our time" following her tragic death on Friday.

R&B legend Etta James has been hospitalized in Riverside, California after suffering breathing problems.

The terminally ill singer, who is battling leukaemia, spent Christmas in hospital and her longtime manager Lupe De Leon admits the 73 year old is "in pretty bad shape".

A representative for Etta James has asked fans to pray for the cancer-fighting blues star as she approaches her 73rd birthday.

It emerged earlier this month that the At Last singer is gravely ill and undergoing treatment for leukemia in California.

Legendary R&B star Etta James is gravely ill and is battling leukemia.

The 72-year-old icon has suffered from Alzheimer's disease since 2009, but her health problems have worsened and new court papers reveal she is currently undergoing cancer treatment. It is not known when she was diagnosed with the latest ailment.

The cancer revelation came to light in legal documents filed by her husband of 41 years, Artis Mills, who has asked a California judge to grant him control of her finances.
