Jackyl
Relentless [Clean]
Release Date: 2002 10 22
Label: Humidity (Red)
Rating:

It's been said time and time again about the Jackyl boys -- they arrived on the scene at the wrong time. Possessing a heavy yet commercial sound (with a biker/Southern rock vibe), Jackyl enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame in the early '90s, but if they'd appeared a few years earlier, they may have been able to challenge Skid Row and Mötley Crüe for upper chart placement. No matter, the band continues to chug along, dropping its sixth release overall in 2002, Relentless. More than ever, singer Jesse James Dupree sounds like the offspring of AC/DC's Brian Johnson -- which is interesting, since Johnson himself lends a hand in the penning of one of the album's standouts, "Kill the Sunshine." Elsewhere, songs such as "If You Want Heavy (I Weigh a Ton)" and "Down This Road Before" would sound dandy cranked at a Sturgis rally. While the style Jackyl hone in on is a well-worn one, they've certainly stuck to their guns over the years. [Humidity issued a clean version of the album in 2002.] Greg Prato, All Music Guide
