Ismaël Lô is a Senegalese musician, writer and painter, who was born in Dogondoutchi, Niger on August 30, 1956. Lo's family returned to Senegal and settled in the town of Rufisque, near the capital Dakar, when Lo was just a baby. As a child, Lo played the guitar and the harmonica. Growing up with a culture steeped in musical roots was infectious for Lo. By the time he was a teenager he had joined the popular group Super Diamono, but left in 1984 to pursue a solo career. Lo has cited Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Etta James, as having an impact on his musical style.
