Opera-pop group Il Divo don't stray from their blueprint on their fourth proper album, The Promise, which isn't greatly different in feel or form from its predecessors -- it still consists of stately, dramatic Euro-pop covers of soft rock classics balanced by a couple of made-to-order tunes. Previously, they sang songs that were hits the world over -- "Nights in White Satin," "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman," "All by Myself" -- and here they rely on "The Power of Love," ABBA's "The Winner Takes All," and Charles Aznavour's "She," which wind up skewing this toward the group's Euro roots. Ultimately, fans can choose to listen to this or to the other Il Divo albums, because The Promise offers more of the same. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

I heard this album and two words come to mind. "IL STINKO." This is the absolute worst music I've heard since Josh Groban first came on the scene. In fact, this is even worse. Because there are FOUR OF THEM. Imagine opera music getting it on with bad romantic standards by people like Peter Cetera. The resulting offspring is Il Divo. I've listened to this album TWICE, and once I got past the album cover of four cheesy guys who belong in Vegas, I was able to focus more completely on the music. Which was unfortunate. Because it's absolutely not my thing at all. I respect great opera music but this, my friends, is not where it's at. This kind of stuff belongs on CD only available for purchase over the television. I recommend giving this album as a Christmas gift to people you never want to speak with again. | ||
