Sean Penn
Before we get started on the Mega Oscar Diary, let's go to a few random ramblings from the cadre of pre-shows around the dial:

-Philip Seymour Hoffman's hat probably came with a matching set of fingerless gloves.

-Those who were unable to see the Los Angeles CW affiliate's pre-show missed this exchange.

-The CW's Female Host: What is the role you'd love to do next. If you could do anything following 'The Wrestler' what would it be?

-Mickey Rourke: (Slowly eyes her up from head to toe with a knowing smile and walks off.)

-I know a lot of people care about fashion, ...

Slick Rick Among Honorees At VH1 Hip Hop Honors

October 6th, 2008 3:46pm EDT
Slick Rick
NEW YORK (AP) - Even though he's considered one of rap's all-time greats, when Slick Rick is asked about his most significant accomplishment, he doesn't mention having a platinum-selling record, classic hits like "Children's Story" or even his most recent accolade - getting saluted as a pioneer at the "VH1 Hip-Hop Honors."

Instead, he cites: owning a home. "I guess my biggest accomplishment would be to purchase some real estate in the Bronx ... to have something to fall back on a rainy day," Slick Rick, who's now a landlord, said in a recent interview. While that may seem rather mundan...

Music Biopics: What's Been Done, What's In The Works, & What We Want

September 19th, 2008 9:07am EDT
Walk the Line
The biopic is a longstanding Hollywood tradition. There are the big budget epics like the now infamous Elizabeth Taylor vehicle "Cleopatra," David Lean's masterpiece, "Lawrence of Arabia," or Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi." Then there are the smaller pictures chronicling the equally gripping stories of those less celebrated. Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of the Irish cerebral palsy painter, Christy Brown in "My Left Foot," or Bill Condon's 2004 film "Kinsey" about human sexuality researcher Alfred Kinsey come to mind.

In recent years, thanks in part to the wide success of the films "Ray...

Isaac Hayes' Family Wants Songs Back

August 24th, 2008 1:00pm EDT
Isaac Hayes
Soul legend Isaac Hayes' family is to launch legal action to retrieve the rights to his hit songs. The singer's back catalog, which includes classics such as "Do Your Thing" and "Theme from Shaft," was sold for $30,000 on the orders of a court following his bankruptcy in 1976.

Now his relatives are planning to recover the rights to the material - which is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in royalties - to provide financial security for his widow and two-year-old son.

An elder son, Isaac Hayes III, says, "He definitely was done wrong. I'm very passionate about that (pr...

August 13th, 2008 11:58am EDT
South Park
South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have paid tribute to the late Isaac Hayes - by posting a message on the show's website.

The soul legend voiced the character of Chef in the cartoon from 1998, before he was written out of the script in 2006. Hayes parted ways with the comedy duo after he objected to an episode ridiculing the controversial Scientology religion, of which the singer was a follower. Their split resulted in Chef being brutally killed off in the cartoon.

However, following Hayes' death on Sunday, Stone and Parker have posted a simple 'in memoriam' tribute...

Lights, Camera, Scientology?

December 17th, 2007 11:50am EST
Tom Cruise
With a ban in Germany on the horizon, scientology has come under severe media scrutiny and public debate in recent years. Ever since Tom Cruise defamed Brooke Shields during post-partum-depression-gate '07, the quasi-religion has been a heated topic. It's been called an oppressive cult. A money-guzzler. A fraud. And it has something to do with an ancient alien named Xenu. So why do so many public faces flock to the Scientology church's doors?

John Travolta, Jenna Elfman, Katie Holmes, Kirstie Alley, Jason Lee and Isaac Hayes are all reported Scientologists. For most of them, their beli...

The show's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were furious with Comedy Central and the gesture is an attempt by the cable network to repair the rift in the relationship. The duo was told the episode was pulled because Cruise was unhappy with the subject matter.

Cruise's representatives have repeatedly denied any involvemen...

Emmy Voters Have a Sense of Humor Even Though Tom Cruise Does Not

July 7th, 2006 8:28am EDT
South Park
The controversial "Trapped In The Closet" episode of South Park, which poked fun at Tom Cruise, is the cheeky installment which earned creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone an Emmy Awards nomination yesterday.

The parody, which questioned Cruise's sexuality and mocked his Scientology beliefs, was caught up in controversy when it first aired last November, and led to South Park regular Isaac Hayes, a fellow Scientologist, quitting the show.

But rather than steer clear of the controversy, brave Emmy voters have embraced it, declaring it worthy of a nod for Outstanding Animated Progr...
