Coleman Hawkins
Immortal Coleman Hawkins
Release Date: 1959 07 03-1963 02 01
Label: Pumpkin
Rating:

There are quite a few recordings (mostly, like this one, on LP) of Coleman Hawkins concert appearances during 1957-65, his final prime period. This Pumpkin set finds Hawk matched with his best partner, trumpeter Roy Eldridge, for fiery versions of "Soft Winds" and "Sweet Sue" in 1959. The second half features the veteran tenor-saxophonist with a Swedish rhythm section performing two ballads and the jumping "Rifftide." This is a good example of strong late-period Coleman Hawkins.
