Coleman Hawkins
Volume One: Warhorses
Release Date: 1957 12 16
Label: Jass
Rating:

Considering the outstanding lineup of players (tenor-great Coleman Hawkins, trumpeter Red Allen and trombonist J.C. Higginbotham among them), this should have been a great session. As it turned out (and is accurately stated in the LP's title), the seven tunes are all overdone standards, most of them from the repertoire of Dixieland bands, like "Bill Bailey," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Saints." In addition to that liability, there is less than 30 minutes of music on this LP. What is here is fine but not really worth searching for. This music has since been combined with the equally brief LP High Standards (Jass 11) on one single CD. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
