Hip-hop legends to receive proclamations from New York City official

Hip-hop legends Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Flash are set to be honoured by New York City officials.

The hitmakers will receive official proclamations from Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera on Wednesday (12Mar14).

Grandmaster Flash's sidekick Melle Mel will also be feted and Pete 'DJ' Jones, who died in January (14), will receive a posthumous honour.

Cabrera says, "Pete gave many of the pioneers of hip-hop culture a platform to showcase their talent."

The news comes days after Grandmaster Flash became the first DJ to be inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk.

Rolling Stone magazine just named Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's rap anthem "The Message" the Greatest Hip-Hop Song Of All Time.

The 1982 hit beat out favorites such as the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force. Also making the top five: Run-DMC's "Sucker M.C.'s" and "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" by the Geto Boys.

Public Enemy's "Fight The Power," Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy," NWA's "Straight Outta Compton," and Eric B. and Rakim's "Paid In Full" complete the top 10.

'Mother Of Hip-Hop' Sylvia Robinson Dies

Fifties hitmaker-turned-pioneering rap producer & Sugar Hill Records founder Sylvia Robinson has died at the age of 75.

She passed away on Thursday after suffering from congestive heart failure.

Robinson began her career in music as a blues singer in the 1950s and enjoyed chart success with songs such as "Pillow Talk" and "Chocolate Candy Blues." She went on to form one half of the duo Mickey & Sylvia, who shot to fame with their 1957 hit "Love is Strange," which was featured in the movie Dirty Dancing.

Rap veteran LL Cool J is to be honored for his career achievements at the upcoming BET Hip-Hop awards.

The I Need Love hit-maker is to receive the I Am Hip-Hop Icon trophy at the ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia next month, following in the footsteps of legendary artists including Grandmaster Flash, Russell Simmons, Ice Cube and Salt-N-Pepa.

The surviving members of rap pioneers Run-D.M.C. will break from tradition when they are inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday - they have refused to perform out of respect to murdered DJ Jam Master Jay.

Hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash is to release his first album of new material in more than 20 years.

The DJ, real name Joseph Saddler, has not put out an LP of original songs since 1988's On The Strength. In the late 1970s, he teamed up with fellow hip-hop pioneers to form Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. The group released the genre-defining hit The Message, but split in 1983.

Veteran rapper Melle Mel hopes his induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame will force the hip-hop genre to "grow up".

Melle Mel - real name Melvin Glover - and his Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five bandmates became the first hip-hop artists to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame on Monday in New York.

And Mel believes the landmark achievement could make hip-hop ditch its violent image.

Rockers R.E.M. were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in New York yesterday - and were joined by original member Bill Berry.

Berry - who left the band in 1997 - reformed with Michael Stipe, Mike Mills and Peter Buck for a one-off performance of songs from their early career at the inauguration ceremony.

R.E.M. were inducted by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder, who praised the band for their groundbreaking career.
