Jerry Goldsmith/Johnny WilliamsJericho/The Ghostbreaker Release Date: 2005 10 25 Running Time: 79:43 Label: FSM Rating: ![]() |
This release is a bit of a cheat by FSM, hanging a lot of its prestige and allure on composer Jerry Goldsmith's name, when, in fact, Goldsmith only wrote the title theme (similar to his work on The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) for the short-lived WWII espionage thriller series Jericho, and the music from one episode, which appears here as a ten-minute suite. The rest of the material from the series was the work of Lalo Schifrin (closely overlapping if not outright mimicking his work on Mission Impossible), Gerald Fried, Morton Stevens, and Richard Shores. The series had a slightly lighter tone than that of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and none of anyone's work here is very far removed from his music for the better-known series; but given the high quality of that material, this is hardly a negative. The second half of the disc is given over to John Williams (then known as Johnny Williams) and his music for the busted 1965 television pilot The Ghostbreaker, which would have been a series for the 1965-66 season had it sold. The main title theme, though a little heavy on the organ, has a brass part that recalls Williams' theme for Kraft Suspense Theater as well as anticipating his music for Land of the Giants. Most of what follows is a good deal moodier and darker than the kind of music that Williams was doing for producer Irwin Allen's kid-oriented science fiction films of the same period, and, except when he slips into light jazz for a lighter moment, also more inventive than a lot of Williams' better known movie work of the 1980s. The sound throughout is excellent, and the annotation is extremely thorough. Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
