This CD is mostly of interest for offering the world premiere performance of Jerry Goldsmith's cantata "Christus Apollo," done with the Southern Chamber Orchestra and Choir, with Charlton Heston narrating the text by Ray Bradbury. Leonard Slatkin is also on hand conducting the Minnesota Orchestra in a performance of Goldsmith's "Music for Orchestra." Neither performance is definitive, nor can too much be said for the audio quality, which is adequate -- Goldsmith subsequently made far more fully realized and satisfying recordings of both works for Telarc, in a release with no technical limitations whatsoever. That is to be preferred, though some serious fans and listeners will be compelled to buy this CD for its sheer historical value, and as an artifact of the late composer's output to which he contributed directly, even if the origins of the CD are somewhat dubious legally.
