The extraordinary career of Barry Andrew Crompton Gibb might never have happened, due to an injury he suffered shortly after his birth on Sept. 1, 1946 on the Island of Man. At just 18 months of age, he was severely burned when he pulled a cup of hot tea onto himself. Doctors told his mother, Barbara Gibb, that he would not survive more than an hour. But he pulled through, and after two months in the hospital, emerged with no memory of the event. In 1953, Gibb's father, drummer and bandleader Hugh Gibb, brought Barry and his brothers, fraternal twins Robin and Maurice, and their sister Lesley, to Manchester, England, where they had their first exposure to rock-n-roll music from their sister,...
