The Learning Curve this week spans the spectrum of many genres of music, from indie powerpop to Christian hard rock, all the way to punk/post-hardcore.

There are many categories of success in the music industry. Some bands have the backing of a record label and are heavily marketed. Other bands garner a huge following of fans and ride that wave via word-of-mouth exposure to success. Spoon falls in the latter category. Formed in 1994 in Austin, Texas, vocalist/guitarist Britt Daniel along with drummer Jim Eno embarked on what would become a very long journey.

The Spill Canvas is the brainchild of Sioux Falls, SD native Nick Thomas. The project started as an acoustic act and has since evolved into the emotionally intense full band that it is today.

Virgin Records has announced it has signed punk-pop outfit The Starting Line via a worldwide deal. The Philadelphia-based quartet will record and release their much-anticipated follow-up to 2005's smash Drive-Thru/Geffen release, "Based on a True Story" later this year.
