Garbage
Release 2.1
Release Date: 1998
Label: Roach
Rating:

Numerous Garbage bootlegs surfaced in the late '90s, many of which boasted decent or excellent sound quality. One of the great-sounding Garbage bootlegs that resulted from the band's European performances of 1998 was Release 2.1, which was recorded live at the Loreley Freilichtbühne in St. Goarshausen, Germany, on June 20, 1998. Boasting audiophile-like sound, this CD was obviously recorded from the venue's soundboard and sounds like it was recorded digitally. But the great sound wouldn't mean much if Garbage didn't deliver a worthwhile performance, and a spirited Shirley Manson is in fine form on favorites from Garbage's self-titled debut album (including "Only Happy When It Rains," "Stupid Girl," "Supervixen," and "Not My Idea"), as well as gems from the band's sophomore effort, Version 2.0 (including "Special," "When I Grow Up," "I Think I'm Paranoid," and others). Bootlegs, of course, are never released with the casual listener in mind -- they're strictly for diehard fans. So when the Roach label put out Release 2.1, it was going after the type of seasoned Garbage addict who bought Version 2.0 the minute it came out. For those who fit that description, Release 2.1 is well worth obtaining if you can find it. Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
