Laura Veirs With Liam Finn At The Earl, Atlanta, GA 5/18/08

May 28th, 2008 2:47pm EDT
Laura Veirs
For the passerby, Seattle's Laura Veirs may have sounded like an old Suzanne Vega cd spinning inside The Earl…or maybe one of a number of 80s female singer/songwriters accompanied only by a guitar. But this is 2008, and Laura Veirs is here and now. Her sound is fresh and original, and her guitar playing is marvelous. She does have a band - the Saltbreakers - which is also the name of her latest release (Nonesuch). For this stripped-down tour, though, she's going solo. And it fits her music. It's simple and melodic with discerning lyrics. Producer Tucker Martine (Decemberists, Bill Fr...

Medeski, Martin & Wood Bassist Finds Brotherly Love

December 1st, 2005 12:36pm EST
Medeski, Martin & Wood
After intermittent musical collaboration that dates back to their childhood, brothers Oliver and Chris Wood (Medeski Martin and Wood bassist) have created 'Ways Not To Lose' (due March 7 on Blue Note Records), a stunningly spare and raw debut album of original songs.

The saying that artists have their entire lives to make a debut album has never been more true than with The Wood Brothers. Growing up in Boulder, CO, Oliver and Chris were encouraged to play music from an early age by their father Bill Wood, an alumnus of the storied Cambridge, MA folk scene of the late 1950s. Oliver reca...

Elvis Costello
On February 28, 2006, Deutsche Grammophon will release Elvis Costello's 'My Flame Burns Blue,' a live album with the legendary Metropole Orkest, a 52-piece jazz orchestra from The Netherlands, as recorded in concert at The Hague. A bonus disc offers a forty-five minute suite from "Il Sogno," Costello's first full length, orchestral work.

The album alternates between imaginatively reinvented Costello favorites like "Almost Blue," "Clubland" and "Watching the Detectives" (arranged "in the style of a 1950s television theme"), Costello compositions seeing release for the first time on a Co...
