The Format was an indie/alternative rock band formed in Peoria, Arizona in 2001 by Nate Ruess and Sam Means. The two bandmates have been friends since grade school and played in pervious bands together before The Format. Primarily a duo, Ruess and Means performed and recorded with a variety of musicians including Mike Schey, Mark Buzard, Don Raymond and Adam Boyd. In 2002 their first single, “The First Single,” was released and became a local favorite leading to a record deal with Elektra Records. 2003 saw the released of their debut album, “Interventions + Lullabies.” In 2005 The Format signed with Atlantic Records after the demise of Elektra.
