Music Talk: Get To Know Jon McLaughlin

December 15th, 2011 11:00am EST
Jon McLaughlin
If you only know Jon McLaughlin as the guy who performed the hit song from Disney's Enchanted, you've only scratched the surface.

The Indiana native is thankful for the recognition that the Academy Award-nominated "So Close" brought him, but wants you to know that it's not his whole repertoire. "It hasn't gotten old yet," he says of the association when we meet in San Diego before a recent gig. "The only thing is that it's so different than what I actually do. When there were some people who only knew me from that movie, they would come out to shows expecting a Michael Buble kind of a th...

The Sing-Off
Season 3 of NBC's The Sing-Off drew to a close Monday night - and after the confetti, I talked with host Nick Lachey, judges Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman, and the top two acts! Here's what happened...

Congratulations to Pentatonix for being named season 3 champions! The Arlington, TX quintet (and favorite of Sonos) beat out the Dartmouth Aires and Urban Method to claim the title.

But there was a lot going on before the results...

The top three acts volunteered their time with charities close to their hearts. Pentatonix visited The Trevor Project, Urban Method helped out the Sickle Cell...

'The Sing-Off': Afro-Blue After Their Exit!

November 28th, 2011 11:10am EST
The Sing-Off
It's down to the wire on NBC's The Sing-Off. Before tonight's live finale, I chatted with Danielle Withers from the much beloved Afro-Blue.

The jazz ensemble from Howard University tackled a mash-up of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" combined with "Fly" by Nicki Minaj with Rihanna, and then the judges handed them the Sam Cooke classic "A Change Is Gonna Come." They battled it out with the Dartmouth Aires for the final spot in tonight's finale, but ultimately came up short.

That didn't stop them from leaving an impression on the audience or even their fellow contestants - you'll recall ...

'The Sing-Off': Vocal Point After Their Exit!

November 21st, 2011 10:30am EST
The Sing-Off
NBC's The Sing-Off said goodbye to Vocal Point this week - and I caught up with group members McKay Crockett, Jake Hunsaker and Tyler Sterling to get the post-show lowdown!

This is a big experience for any group - so what did you take away from The Sing-Off personally?

McKay: I think for me personally, one of the biggest things I took from the show is if you put your mind to something, you can achieve really great things. We have a really specific purpose, and it was just another example of if you have a purpose, amazing things can happen. Great things have happened and will continu...

'The Sing-Off': Sonos After Their Exit!

October 17th, 2011 11:00am EDT
The Sing-Off
NBC's The Sing-Off said goodbye to Sonos last week - and I caught up with Chris Harrison to ask about the group's next moves!

What were you expecting when you started on the show, and how did things compare to your expectations?

I will be completely honest - I did not expect us to be there terribly long, because we were performing our music in a way we weren't used to at all. Most of our songs are often lesser known, or moody and quiet. We're not using the tools that we usually use. All of a sudden we really felt the size of our group as five.

Another thing - we had not used chore...

'The Sing-Off': Kinfolk 9 After Their Exit!

October 10th, 2011 11:00am EDT
The Sing-Off
NBC's The Sing-Off sent another group home last week - and I've got their dish! Here's what Jenilee Reyes of Kinfolk 9 had to say.

What motivated your group to compete on the show?

I think what motivated us is that we were really excited to jump into unfamiliar territory. The first time we got together, for our first rehearsal, we were just talking about, "Wow. We're so excited to learn to sing a different way." It was scary but it was exciting.

What did you expect from the series, and how did your experience compare to your expectations?

We didn't really expect to get affected t...

Hailing from Wilsonville High School in Wilsonville, OR, Soul'd Out is comprised of high school students of varying grade levels and musical backgrounds. Here's what group member Ethan Bryant had to say.

What motivated your group members to say that appearing on the show was something you wanted to do?

Coming fresh off our 2nd place finish at the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) finals, a lot of us were ...

Returning for a third season, NBC’s “The Sing-Off” is the most unique singing competition on television and judge Ben Folds is excited about this year’s batch of contestants. “I think this is the season of innovation,” says Folds of the field of competitors. “As [the season] evolves, I think everyone will see the innovation become second nature.”

February 13th, 2011 1:33pm EST
Top 10 Romantic Songs To Listen To This Valentine's Day
It’s February, and everyone who has to leave their house for any reason knows what that means: Valentine’s Day. It’s on the radio, it’s in the stores, it’s all over. Valentine’s Day serves two purposes: it reminds people to pay special attention to the people they love, and it gives the radio DJs an excuse to play more love songs than usual.

For your consideration, I give you my Top 10 Romantic Songs. Some are overplayed, some are classic, most are beautiful pieces of music. But they’re all about love. And yeah, I like to complain about Valentine’s Day as much as the next person, but ...

Switches To Tour With She Wants Revenge, Be Your Own Pet & The Virgins

May 18th, 2008 12:00pm EDT
Switches
"Well, the idea was a band, but we're really a neurotic bunch of obsessive compulsive weirdos," Switches singer Matt Bishop says.

The neurotic obsessive-compulsive weirdos, pulled through impressively and way fantastically, and on March 18, 2008 Switches released their debut album, Lay Down The Law, produced by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) on Interscope.

Strangely, Switches, who now all live in London, came together naturally and easily. Matt grew up in Southend (a low-rent seaside town, something like the old Asbury Park neighbourhood) and formed the band while at college:...
