The Explosion
Sick of Modern Art
Release Date: 2003 04 22
Label: Tarantula Records
Rating:

You'd have thought some other band would have had the name Explosion before, but maybe fate was just waiting for a band that sounds like this pounding punk foursome from Boston. Matt Hock may shout his lungs off on ultra-harsh punk tracks like "13 O'Clock" and punishing hardcore like "Kill My Friends" just like he did on 2000's Flash Flash Flash, and sometimes he sounds like Jello Biafra on Dead Kennedys' In God We Trust, Inc. on the breakneck "Anonymous I.D." But he's not just another Ian MacKaye clone, and even with the A Different Kind of Tension Buzzcocks sounds on "Signature," these guys aren't just another bunch of 1977 revivalists. Excuse the handful of too-fast thrash songs, for the rest of this is pulverizing. They sound kind of like American's answer to the well-missed China Drum, if only more people got that reference. All their amps sound like they're on 11, and no further explanation is necessary. Someone should have to shout, "Get down! Taste the dirt!" whenever they're about to play this.
