Duffy Talks To Marie Claire About Her Childhood, Singing Career, Fame & Success

January 5th, 2011 8:10pm EST
Duffy, the Welsh songbird who escaped a 1960s time capsule, is doing her best to explain where she fits into this world. "I sing for others to enjoy," she insists, rather unexpectedly. "I have never done this for myself." Asked to expand, the result is no less perplexing. "I am the singer. I don't do singing," she stresses. "This is who I am. I am the voice. This is me. There's no separation. My record is me. The music is me. I don't live for myself. It's so hard to explain."

"I remember signing a big record deal and being in a cafe by myself, weighing up what it really meant," she recalls...

Duffy Opens Up About Dumping Her Manager

December 10th, 2010 1:09pm EST
Welsh soul star Duffy cut ties with her management company earlier this year because she grew sick of advisers dictating her style and marketing her as a "real" artist.

The 26-year-old singer has dumped her representatives at Rough Trade Management and her manager Jeanette Lee, who helped steer her to fame, and signed a new firm to take charge of her career. Duffy admits she was unhappy with her treatment and had no choice but to make a break.

She says, "So many people around me thought they knew better than me. There were so many people judging... When I took stock of everything, I tho...

Duffy Struggled With Her Instant Fame

November 11th, 2010 10:43am EST
Soul singer Duffy was miserable and lonely after finding fame, insisting she was so homesick she cried herself to sleep.

The Welsh star became an overnight sensation after scoring a hit with her debut track Mercy, but she admits she couldn't cope with her grueling schedule and pined for home while travelling around the world.

She tells Britain's The Sun, "I love my music and performing but some of the other demands terrified me. I am just a normal girl from Wales and always will be. I locked myself in my room and cried and I'm not usually that kind of girl. I am quite tough and can cope...

Although The Ting Tings didn't win an award at The Brits (they were beaten by Duffy twice), it didn't sour their live performance featuring Estelle.

Kudos to the group for pulling off an actual live performance (or a fantastic pre-recording, but let's assume the former).

2009 Grammy Award Predictions

January 30th, 2009 12:05pm EST
My Morning Jacket
What can I say? I'm a sucker for the Grammys and the Oscars, and after a few years of real yawners, the Grammys in particular are back with a vengeance! The performances lineup is Coachella-esque impressive, with U2 and Coldplay joining the likes of Jonas Brothers, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne(!), Paul McCartney(!!) and Radiohead(!!!). But just as important as the performers are the award winners, and if you're in an office pool somewhere or on your way to Vegas and need a little help predicting the winners, you've come to the right place! (Well actually, if you're on your way to Vegas you ...

Interview With 17-Year-Old Rock Star Gabriella Cilmi

January 29th, 2009 9:49am EST
Gabriella Cilmi is 17. She doesn't look, sound or have the demeanor of a 17-year-old; nevertheless, she is 17. Now that this minor, but often mentioned, fact is out of the way, we can move onto who Gabriella Cilmi really is.

Gabriella loves classic rock! Often noting Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones as her early inspirations, she has more than her age to separate her from other singer-songwriters. She is too often lumped in with Duffy, Adele and Amy Winehouse.

"When I got signed, you know I was just used to jamming with my mates in the garage after school. We wo...

Can Cover Art Affect Music Sales?

October 2nd, 2008 10:28am EDT
Why do record labels and musicians put so much thought into the art work that will grace the covers of new releases to the public? If we were to consider the recent "friendly" album sales feud between the releases of Kanye West's Graduation and 50 Cent's Curtis, perhaps for example, it may have been that West's contemporary and animated cover edged out 50's dark harder edged self portrait cover art. Though there's no given concrete evidence that the purchases of music is motivated by cover art, but there's nothing like getting your most favorite music release with a great designed cover....
