Dredg
Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy
Release Date 2011 05 03
Label Superball Music
Rating:

Reinventing themselves with a smoothed-out, electronic-heavy sound, Dredg team up with producer Dan the Automator for their fifth album, Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy. Following the trend from some of their earlier albums, Dredg continue to rework their sound, relying less on live instrumentation to go for a more production-focused sound. While this collaboration certainly ups the slickness of their sound, it doesn’t feel like it plays to the strong suits of either Dredg or Dan the Automator, moving the band far enough away from its old sound to make things feel different, but not quite far enough to let the producer really explore and push the sound into new territories. Despite this, Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy does find the band continuing to evolve quite a bit given the short break between albums, giving Dredg fans something to sink their teeth into without the customary three- to four-year gaps that they’ve become accustomed to.
