Placido Domingo To Help Tackle Music Piracy

Opera heavyweight Placido Domingo has vowed to wage war on music piracy after he was named chairman of an influential trade group representing record labels.

The iconic Spanish tenor, 70, was announced as chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) at a London ceremony on Tuesday.

Among his early challenges is the need to combat music piracy, with Domingo conceding that illegal file-sharing could damage the future careers of new music stars.

Penelope Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem were inducted into Spain's Walk of Fame on Monday as part of the organization's opening ceremony.

The Vicky Cristina Barcelona stars showed up to the Calle Martin de los Heros area in Madrid to be honored at the Street of Stars.

The couple took it in turns to pose in front of their own sidewalk plaque, while other celebrities inducted include actor Antonio Banderas, singer Julio Iglesias, tenor Placido Domingo and director Pedro Almodovar.

Placido Domingo Returns To Work After Cancer Surgery

Spanish opera star Placido Domingo has returned to work in Los Angeles, just weeks after undergoing surgery for cancer.

The tenor, 69, went under the knife at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital earlier this month to have a cancerous polyp removed from his colon.

He has been spending his time recuperating in Barcelona, Spain and more recently Acapulco, Mexico, but he flew to California on Thursday where he resumed his post as director of the Los Angeles Opera Company.

Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo are to perform together on Sunday for the first time since the death of their Three Tenors tourmate Luciano Pavarotti last year.

The opera singers will pay tribute to the late maestro at a special show held by the Italian tenor's widow Nicoletta Mantovani and Princess Haya Of Jordan in Petra, Jordan this weekend.

Rocker/photographer Bryan Adams and opera star Placido Domingo have teamed up to turn the volume up for the hearing impaired. Domingo appears in a new Adams photo, taken to highlight a new initiative to help research into deafness.

Cupping his hand over his left ear for the picture, the tenor says, "Life is full of sounds. For 500 million people it's not."

The print ads featuring the Adams photograph are part of the Hear The World initiative by hearing aid firm Phonak, which supports projects focused on helping hearing impaired people globally.

The funeral service for Luciano Pavarotti has begun in his hometown of Modena, Italy, with singers Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and U2 rocker Bono among the stars in attendance.

Spanish tenor Placido Domingo has confirmed he'll be the latest celebrity making a guest appearance on an upcoming episode of animated TV series The Simpsons. In the episode, called The Homer Of Seville, the opera great takes singing lessons from Homer Simpson.

Opera star Placido Domingo's seven-year-old movie epic The Other Conquest is to be re-released in US cinemas to mark Mexico's national day Cinco de Mayo. The film, about the ancient Aztec tribe's efforts to preserve its culture in the wake of the Spanish invasion in the early 16th century, was released to limited cinemas in 2000 and grossed an estimated $3 million.
