Micky Dolenz
Demoiselle
Release Date: 1998
Label: Micky Dolenz
Rating:

Surprising as it may seem, this is the first solo rock CD by Micky Dolenz. He has recorded two children's CDs (Micky Dolenz Puts You to Sleep and Broadway Mickey, both excellent), as well as being part of the London cast of the stage recording of The Point. But here is his solo rock debut. Sadly, this is a self-produced CD of demos and not the complete album one would expect or hope. That said, the music and the songs themselves are very good. He can write rock & roll well. Three of these tracks turned up on The Monkees reunion CD, Justus ("Never Enough," "Regional Girl," and "Dying of a Broken Heart"). Here the songs are more raw and perhaps have an edge that is lost with The Monkees versions. Dolenz has a great rock voice, and he uses it to its fullest throughout. The only track that is not a demo is the live "Since I Fell for You," which is pleasing. However, there is no information about who is playing with the artist on this or any other track. This is somewhat unfortunate, as the backup band(s) are tight and are utilized quite well. In fact, more information throughout the CD would have been welcomed. Overall, a pretty good release and ones that fans will definitely enjoy. Aaron Badgley, All Music Guide
