Check Out Our Thoughts Of Lee DeWyze's 'Oil & Water'

2/19/2016 2:10pm EST
Lee DeWyze Finds His Niche On 'Oil & Water'
For Lee DeWyze, the pop success that has greeted many American Idol alums never materialized – he didn’t fit the mold. While he’s never been the next Justin Timberlake, DeWyze clearly possessed a captivating instrument, throughout American Idol and his albums. Three notable albums in (he’s released independently as well), it seems as if DeWyze has “found himself” on Oil & Water. So does self-discovery make for a respectable album?

Yes and no. Oil & Water thrives off of its “vibe” you might say. DeWyze impressively composes every song (produces and mixes along with Nico Grossfield addition...

New Albums You Need To Check Out This Week

Vince Gill’s 'Down To My Last Bad Habit' Leads Albums To Check O
After Wiz Khalifa (Khalifa) and Future (EVOL) kicked off February 2016 with a bang, things settle down a bit this week. Even so, a longtime country veteran (Vince Gill) leads the charge this week with an anticipated new album. Gill’s not the only country artist in the mix, as Wynonna Judd, Joey + Rory, and Wheeler Walker, Jr. join the party as well. It’s not all country though – there are some American Idols in the mix this week as well.

1) Vince Gill, Down To My Last Bad Habit (MCA Nashville)

Following 2013 collaborative country album Bakersfield (with Paul Franklin), Vince Gill ret...

American Idols, Where Are They Now?

Once known as the show that could instantly make you a star, "American Idol" has suffered lackluster ratings and has had as many "Idols" fail as succeed. Still, the winners that America voted for have not always stayed within the realm of music, some have spread their wings to the acting world as well. Some of the more popular winners are still in the spotlight, some have faded into obscurity, Here is the latest on what many of your favorite "American Idol" winners have been up to since winning.

'Idol' Star Lee Dewyze Ties The Knot

7/23/2012 9:14am EDT
Lee Dewyze & Joanna Walsh
On Saturday, "American Idol" winner Lee Dewyze tied the knot with model/actress Jonna Walsh. The couple got married in Camarillo, Calif., and the bride wore a strapless Lili Bridal gown.

Following the ceremony, the singer, who won season nine of "Idol" back in 2010, tweeted, "Beautiful wedding, beautiful girl, just beautiful... We're married!"

He later tweeted, "Now that I have a minute, I just want to say thank you SO much for all your support and loving words me and my wife ;) @jonnawalsh!"

DeWyze and Walsh met in 2010 and got engaged in 2011. The newlyweds are reportedly honeymooning ...

Phillip Phillips Continues Worrying Trend Of 'White Guy With Guitar' Winners For 'American Idol'

5/24/2012 4:07pm EDT
Phillip Phillips
Nothing against Phillip Phillips, who surely has some talent, but his win is the latest in a line of what fans have coined "White Guys with Guitars," or "WGWG." With ratings and record sales getting lower, can American Idol do anything to curb the trend?

Since the music competition allowed contestants to play instruments while singing, the show has seen David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, and Phillip Phillips take the prize over a more varied and (arguably) talented field. McCreery is a bit different, slanting towards crooning country instead of the light pop the rest of t...

Scotty McCreery Is First Country Star To Debut At #1 On Billboard Chart

10/13/2011 9:13am EDT
Scotty McCreery
Reigning "American Idol" champion Scotty McCreery has made chart history by becoming the first country artist to debut an album at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Having just turned 18, he's also the youngest male artist to enter the countdown at the top with a debut, beating Omarion - who charted with O in 2005 - by two years.

McCreery's new album "Clear as Day" has opened with 197,000 sales, making him the first "American Idol" winner since 2003 to hit number one with their first release.

Ironically, his success comes just days after the last "Idol" winner, Lee DeWyze, was dropp...

'American Idol' Recap: Was This The Most Boring Finale Ever?

5/25/2011 9:35am EDT
Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery
The most boring finalists ever. That seemed to be the conventional wisdom going into the evening. That, despite a strong start, this season of ‘Idol’ was destined to fall into oblivion with two dull finalists that wouldn’t be able to deliver the finale this Renaissance season deserved.

Yes, that might be true. It may have been more interesting to see James square off against Pia or Jacob take on Haley, but that doesn’t necessarily mean this is the most boring collection of contestants ever, does it?

Here’s a ranking of finale pairings from least boring to most boring:

9 (Least Boring): S...

'American Idol' Recap: Paul McDonald Goes Home On An Entertaining Results Show

4/15/2011 8:11am EDT
American Idol
After a year of curses, one of my favorites finally goes home.

I’ve had terrible trouble with my favorite American Idol contestants this year. First, there was my favorite contestant of all time (Molly Dewolf Swenson) being cruelly cast away before I even got a chance to see her sing again. Then there was my hastily thrown together favoritism of Tim Halperin (really, just a rebound favorite) that sent him packing the next week. With all this, I decided to keep my two favorites in the top 13 a secret, lest I doom them again. But now it doesn’t matter for one of them, as Paul is gone.

I rea...

Crystal Bowersox Weds

10/11/2010 8:46am EDT
Crystal Bowersox
American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox has married her boyfriend following a whirlwind romance - just months after she was dumped by a former partner on the eve of the talent show finale.

The singer finished second to Lee DeWyze in May and revealed shortly afterwards that her partner Tony Kusian ended their relationship just hours before she was due to take the stage. Bowersox put the heartbreak behind her by embarking on a new relationship with her longtime pal, musician Brian Walker, and the pair announced its engagement last month.

The 25 year old wed Walker on Sunday at a club in ...

Hometown Critics Hard On 'American Idol' Champ Lee DeWyze

8/31/2010 9:19am EDT
Hometown Critics Hard On
Chicago native and "American Idol" champ Lee DeWyze received chilly reviews from the Windy City's music critics last weekend.

DeWyze has been performing with the rest of last season's top ten finalists on the American Idols Live! 2010 tour this summer, and the show brought them to DeWyze's stomping grounds on Saturday. The Chicago Tribune didn't sound too impressed with the raspy singer-songwriter, calling his set "not particularly memorable," and said he looked like "Guy Fieri's evil twin." The Chicago Sun-Times called him "a dime-a-dozen coffeehouse player" and "personality-free."

Nobody Wants To Go See The Jonas Brothers

7/8/2010 10:07pm EDT
Jonas Brothers
The Jonas Brothers and the stars of "American Idol" have become the latest victims of America's cruel summer - they've been forced to cancel concerts due to poor ticket sales.

Promoters behind the American Idols Live tour have scrapped eight shows, while the Jonas Brothers have stunned industry experts by axing 16 dates from their 2010 summer tour.

Instead, the siblings have added three shows in markets where ticket sales are healthy.

The latest tour cancellations come days after Lilith Fair organizers announced they were scrapping 11 dates due to sluggish ticket sales. Rihanna and Chris...

'American Idol' - A History Of Never Getting It Right

5/27/2010 3:50pm EDT
Lee DeWyze
Last night’s American Idol finale brought exciting performances from veteran acts, visits from past contestants and of course, an awkward speech from Paula Abdul. The night also brought about a new idol in Lee DeWyze but his victory over Crystal Bowersox begs the question, did American Idol crown the right contestant last night?

Of course, the answer to that question is largely subjective but Bowersox did appear to be the season’s favorite. Simon Cowell, in all of his omnipotence, said early in the season that Bowersox was the one to beat. Not too long after that episode, Cowell even went ...

'American Idol' Grand Finale Mega-Diary 2010

5/27/2010 9:14am EDT
Lee Dewyze
It’s mega-diary time once again, kids. A time to give the blow-by-blow, the play-by-play of the most important events in pop culture.

The only question is whether or not this is the last time the “American Idol” finale warrants such treatment. The mega-diary is reserved for TV events like The Oscars and The Emmys (and by all rights The Super Bowl if lack of sobriety didn’t prevent cataloging that evening), but I’m not sure how much longer “Idol” is going to fit.

With Simon’s departure and dwindling ratings, this night next year could be on a part with the season finale of “Survivor” or ...

Lee DeWyze Wins 'American Idol'

5/26/2010 10:19pm EDT
American Idol Lee DeWyze
The ninth season has officially come to a close, with Lee DeWyze taking home the title of the next "American Idol."

It was only the second time in the show's history where neither of the final two contestants - DeWyze and runner up Crystal Bowersox - had ever finished in the bottom two or bottom three with viewer votes. The other two to accomplish the feat were Season 7 winner David Cook and runner up David Archuleta. Former winners Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and Cook never landed in the bottom three with viewer votes either.

Speaking of viewer votes, th...

'American Idol' Recap: Crystal Blows Out Lee While Simon Gives His Final Criticism

5/26/2010 9:16am EDT
Crystal Blows Out Lee While Simon Gives His Final Criticism
All right kids. It’s game time. “Idol” finals. And even though this season was lackluster to say the least, I’m still a bit excited. So let’s go to the tale of the tape:

In one corner we have Lee Dewyze. The former paint store employee and master of the one move – to imitate the lead singer of 3 Doors Down. What he lacks in stage presence he makes up for in his ability to make young girls have a crush on him. He hasn’t been great this year, but he’s been better than most of the lame competition he’s faced. Well, all except for Lilly.

In the second corner we have Crystal Bowersox –...

'American Idol' Recap: Casey Goes Home On Homecoming Night

5/20/2010 9:18am EDT
Casey James Sent Home
On Tuesday I completely lost faith in “American Idol”.

It wasn’t hard to do. When we watch the producers, judges and everyone else involved clearly favoring two contestants with enhanced production values and raves entirely without base, it’s only natural to become a bit jaded about the real purpose of this show.

Then there are nights like last night which reaffirm what makes this show great – how, like how they do it or not, “Idol” plucks people out of obscurity and makes their dreams come true.

The journey home episode always hammers this aspect of the show home. While these contesta...

'American Idol' Recap: The Judges Make Their Favorites Clear

5/19/2010 9:50am EDT
AI Final 3 perform
It’s judges’ choice night on “Idol” and you know what that means: Judges irrationally supporting whomever they chose a song for.

Actually, last night it was more than that. It went far beyond the judges’ giving high marks only to validate their song selections and into something that almost seemed like collusion. Never before was it more apparent who the judges were trying to stick in the finale, and never before did that seem less deserved than the undeserved praise we saw reigned last night.

So who were the lucky two? Well, you can probably guess, but read on to find out.

Random Tho...

'American Idol' Recap: Big Mike Goes Home

5/13/2010 9:24am EDT
Big Mike Sent Home
What do a superstar modern rocker, a VH1 reality show star, and Bon Jovi have in common? They all performed on last night's "American Idol" results show that's what. And only one of them stunk. Read on to find how who it is as we say goodbye to Big Mike.

The Results

There's not a whole lot to say about Big Mike's exit. Certainly it was very predictable (even I got it right!) and it's not like it hasn't happened before, but it's sad all the same.

I felt like Mike was the only thing truly different left on this show since Siobahn's exit. While the rest are decidedly mainstream (as muc...

'American Idol' Recap: Duets Are Great, Solo Performances Fall Flat On Movie Night

5/12/2010 9:25am EDT
American Idol
By now we all know this season of "American Idol" is a dud, and a few duets aren't going to save it.

But rather than belabor the point or add another column to the substantial list about how "Idol" may have officially gone over the hill this season (Last week's ratings were its lowest since season 1!) I'm going to give you chance to make a difference.

If you follow this link, you'll be taken to a survey where you can evaluate the season. This survey supposedly goes straight to the producers which means you could improve the show for next year which means we'll never have to suffer this t...

'American Idol' Recap: Aaron Leaves, Lada Gaga Underwhelms, And Harry Connick, Jr. Rocks

5/6/2010 9:33am EDT
Aaron Kelly sings his farewell
Lady Gaga, Harry Connick, Jr. and Ill-Fitting Tuxedos! Sounds like another Idol results show to me. Let’s get on with it shall we?

The Results

I can’t help but think this Aaron elimination came one week too late. It seems like it happens every year – we have a final four (or five) picked out and wait for that showdown, but it never quite shakes out that way. There’s always one who sticks around a little too long, and this year it was Aaron.

Let’s face it. Aaron had a zero-percent chance of winning this thing. He’s got about the fourth-best voice remaining and easily the worst sta...

'American Idol' Recap: Siobahn Goes Home As Shakira Rocks The House

4/29/2010 9:14am EDT
Siobahn Goes Home as Shakira Rocks the House
Time to try something new with The Results Show Recap. Rather than force you to read paragraph after paragraph of my ramblings to find me express confusion over who these people are that are singing the number one song in the country or my thoughts on that week’s castaway, we’re breaking it down into three easily digestable sections for your reading pleasure. Ending, as always, with The Idol Power Rankings.

The Results

Well, my last remaining favorite contestant this year bites the dust in her first trip to the bottom three. It’s not really hard to figure – with those tattoos, piercin...

Recap: Even With Alicia Keys, Speedy 'American Idol' Show Fails To Inspire

4/21/2010 9:26am EDT
American Idol
It’s the first hourlong American Idol episode. And you know what that means, time for ninety-second performances where the contestants have no chance to build to any sort of climax or show what they can do. Oh joy!

In honor of this ridiculous night, let’s rush through the intro and get straight to the recap.

Random Thoughts Waiting for the Actual Show To Start:

A nice sped-through introduction from Ryan. I imagine we’ll be seeing plenty of this expedience as they attempt to shove seven performances in 44 minutes. . .er. . .one hour.

I think Alicia Keys is great, but did she ...
