Descendents is a punk rock band that formed in 1978 in Manhattan Beach, California by guitarist Frank Navetta, bassist Tony Lombardo and drummer Bill Stevenson. In 1980 they enlisted Stevenson's friend Milo Aukerman from school as a singer, and reappeared as a punk band, becoming a major player in the hardcore scene developing in Los Angeles at the time.

Their debut album, 1982’s “Milo Goes to College” followed Descendents' 1981 “Fat EP,” a record which had established the band's presence in the southern California hardcore punk movement with its short, fast, aggressive songs. Released through New Alliance Records, the album featured a mix of fast and aggressive hardcore punk with melody and cheeky love songs. Ironically, Aukerman left the band and did in fact go off to college to earn a doctorate in biochemistry. Stevenson left shortly thereafter to take on the role of drummer for Black Flag.

Descendents resurfaced in 1985 with a new singer, Ray Cooper, for the album “I Don't Want to Grow Up.” However, by 1987 Aukerman was back to resume lead vocalist duties with guitarist Stephen Egerton, bassist Karl Alvarez, and drummer Bill Stevenson back on board. The band' fourth album, “All” appeared in 1987. The album was only moderately successful as the band's popularity began to wean amidst and changing musical climate which resulted in the band taking a seven-year hiatus.

Descendents reemerged in 1995 with a new album, “Everything Sucks.” The band embarked on a tour in support of the album.

After another extended break from recording, 2004 marked the released of their sixth studio album, “Cool to Be You.”

In 2008 founding member Frank Navetta died. In 2010 the Descendents reunited again for a series of gigs and since then have continued to perform at various festivals around the world.
