The 51 Best Albums Of 2013 - What Made Your List?

December 30th, 2013 6:00pm EST
Daft Punk
Ranking the very best albums of any year is incredibly difficult; there are always misses. 2013 was filled with some triumphant musical moments, though not all of their parent albums were necessarily ‘worthy’ of being considered the best of the year. Because of various factors, this list has its surprises and like any album reviewed, its triumphs and flaws. One thing’s for sure – the top ten to fifteen albums are pretty close to the cream of the crop from my perspective. Here are the 50 (+1) best albums of 2013!

1) Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City

October 13th, 2013 2:50pm EDT
Ariana Grande
Welcome to the final part of my Favorites, Least Favorites, and Honorable Mentions of 2013.  Here is where I housed my honorable mentions, which were many.  If you missed the previous two posts, here’s how I opened them up respectively, beginning with Favorites and ending with Least Favorites:

“As I look over my 2013 playlist from my iPod, I realize I have listened to numerous albums this year.  In fact, the amount of music that my ears have consumed and my pen has analyzed is pretty scary…and I still missed lots of albums! SMH! Some were special, some made me cringe, and som...

May 26th, 2009 6:00pm EDT
V Factory
Nathaniel Flatt of up-and-coming boy band V Factory took the time to sit down with Starpulse's Larry Gould and discuss his path to stardom, his influences and what that mysterious "V" in the band's name stands for. V Factory recently cracked the Top 40 with their debut single "Love Struck" and are readying their as-yet-untitled debut album for a release later this year.

Nathaniel Flatt first realized his calling at the tender age of five when he saw a musical production of Peter Pan in his hometown of Cookeville, Tennessee. It proved to be a pivotal point in his life, thus beginning ...

Music Spotlight: Depeche Mode 'Sounds Of The Universe'

April 21st, 2009 11:41am EDT
Depeche Mode
Upon the first listen of the Depeche Mode's aptly named new 12th studio release, Sounds of the Universe, one will probably be tempted to turn up their music player to check the volume of sonic nuances perceived as error. The band's sound and fragile tension are in itself the beauty of their thirty year legacy as a long-standing electronic music act.

With this in mind, Sounds of the Universe embraces the band's analog vintage past and culminates here in full circle in what can be best described as "yesterday's future." From beginning to end, the band's new release incorporates a var...

The Learning Curve: A Mix Of Light And Loud

March 31st, 2009 10:00am EDT
This time around the Learning Curve is mixing things up a bit, going from heavy to light and touching on almost everything in-between along the way. This is perhaps one of the more diversified columns I've put together but that doesn't mean the bands are any less talented.

Seriously though, this week has something for everyone. From frenzied post-hardcore like Stiletto Formal and La Dispute to party all night electronica like Innerpartysystem, to sounds like up-and-coming rock act Zillion and even a bit of hardcore with the next big thing in Buffalo, His Name Was Yesterday.

Ironic Quote Of The Day

Depeche Mode
"My 13 year old is heavily into My Chemical Romance and the emo scene, dying her hair and putting thick make-up on... It's not easy for me to say, 'I don't think you should be going to school like that.'" Depeche Mode star Martin L. Gore has problems telling his youngest daughter what to wear after years of sporting bondage gear at live shows.

Five 'Love Songs' That Aren't Really Love Songs

July 30th, 2008 9:32am EDT
The time has come. You've fallen in love. You just can't stop thinking about your significant other. You're ready to take the next step. You're ready to make them a mix tape.

Seems easy right? Just Google "Love Songs" and pop the first 15 you see into your iTunes, hit the circle in the upper right-hand corner and burn away. But not so fast, Romeo. There are pitfalls in the world of blindly including love songs.

In fact, there are many songs purported as anthems of adoration that are anything but. Tunes so misinterpreted that they turn into wedding standards and accompany f...

Music Technology: Then And Now

May 2nd, 2008 1:38pm EDT
Almost everyone owns an Ipod, or some other form of music listening device, that we can thank to the benefits of the changes in music technology. If we were to consider however how the "music" itself has changed due to technology, then the changes in music technology can be viewed from a whole other point of view.

From a broader perspective we can perhaps say it really started with the German Electronic pop group Kraftwerk. They were essentially the first band to have the foresight to mix electronic sounds provided by the "new technology" on hand in the 70's and mix it with the pop s...

Musicians Moving In New Directions

January 22nd, 2008 10:43am EST
With the present iPod generation, it appears the established ways major recording labels promote and distribute recording acts have become obsolete. Swift modernization brought on by technological advancements by computer companies like Steve Jobs' Apple has revolutionized the music industry. Recording labels are now at a lost as to how to effectively compete with the new rapid trends forming within the music industry.

Musicians not regulated by outdated corporate machinations have been more aware in seeking ways to effectively employ new benefits afforded with the developments of ne...
