Nirvana Nominated For 2014 Induction Into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

Nirvana has made it onto the official ballot for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the band's first year of eligibility.

The Seattle grunge rock trio heads up this year's list of 16 nominees, which also includes first-time nominees Linda Ronstadt, Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel and Yes.

KISS, Deep Purple, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Replacements, Cat Stevens, LL Cool J, N.W.A., The Meters, Chic, Link Wray and The Zombies round out this year's field of nominees.

Deep Purple's Jon Lord Dies From Cancer

Deep Purple rocker Jon Lord has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 71.

The keyboard player was diagnosed with a tumor in his pancreas in 2011 and he headed to Israel in February to undergo specialist treatment. Lord was due to make his live comeback at a show in Hagen, Germany earlier this month, but had to postpone the concert due to poor health.

Guitar great Jeff Beck, the Foo Fighters and the Manic Street Preachers were among the big winners at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honor Awards in London on Wednesday night.

Dave Grohl's group walked away with the Band of the Year trophy, while the Manic Street Preachers were handed the Classic Songwriters prize at the ceremony, held at the English capital's Roundhouse venue.

Deep Purple star Jon Lord has announced he is battling cancer.

The keyboard player, who co-founded the Smoke on the Water heavy rock icons, has posted a statement about his health crisis on his blog.

The 70 year old writes, "I would like all my friends, followers, fans and fellow travellers to know that I am fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure.

"I shall of course be continuing to write music - in my world it just has to be part of the therapy - and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year."

Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice has taken aim at Elvis Costello, Gil Scott-Heron and other acts who have boycotted shows in Israel, branding them "real wimps" for allowing politics to get in the way of their music.
