The Magic Number hit-makers will release Get Away, their first musical offering since 2004's The Grind Date, next week as part of their independent digital single series, during which the band will release one song a month from new album You're Welcome through and other social media outlets.

Maseo, the group's DJ, tells, "I think it's a great record to reintroduce ourselves with. It's pretty much reflecting on the state of hip-hop at this moment...

Tribeca: Beats, Rhymes & Life Of A Tribe Called Quest

4/30/2011 7:40am EDT
Once upon a time, someone in the hip-hop community decreed that Bill Clinton had earned the “Black People Card”. I’m not certain, but it sounds like something Chris Rock would’ve said, so for now I’ll credit him with this. The argument was that Clinton was so cool, so down with black people, that had it not been for the colour of his skin, he’d be considered black on street cred alone. Think of the Black People Card as the Black Amex of the hip-hop community: you can’t apply for the card. If you ask, chances are you can’t afford it. No, you have to be sent an invitation. The hip-hop communi...

Gorillaz Return With 'Plastic Beach'; Out March 9

1/21/2010 6:30pm EST
Five years on from the release of "Demon Days", Murdoc Niccals and co. return with Plastic Beach. Gorillaz have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a 'Plastic Beach' HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This 'Plastic Beach' is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.

The album is preceded by the first single, "Stylo" (featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack), which debuted on radio broadcasts last night and will be available for download on January 26.

Slick Rick Among Honorees At VH1 Hip Hop Honors

10/6/2008 3:46pm EDT
Slick Rick
NEW YORK (AP) - Even though he's considered one of rap's all-time greats, when Slick Rick is asked about his most significant accomplishment, he doesn't mention having a platinum-selling record, classic hits like "Children's Story" or even his most recent accolade - getting saluted as a pioneer at the "VH1 Hip-Hop Honors."

Instead, he cites: owning a home. "I guess my biggest accomplishment would be to purchase some real estate in the Bronx ... to have something to fall back on a rainy day," Slick Rick, who's now a landlord, said in a recent interview. While that may seem rather mundan...

The Wonder Years with DJ Wonder

1/30/2008 11:16am EST
DJ Wonder
In one of the fine elements that make up Hip-Hop - Djing - DJ Wonder has managed to link a vibrate glaze of perfection through the ears of true Hip-Hop heads followed with head nods that reaffirm the DJ's skills on the tables.

Listening to his playlist at trendy night spot Manor in Manhattan, the sea of club goers joust back and forth on the floor while others sit on cushy sofas in induced states of sedation while pulling back on apple martinis and Hennessy. The journey through Wonder's world is a throwback to '80's and '90's music trickled with new Hip-Hop and R&B.

Chaka Khan: 'Funk This' In Stores September 25

7/31/2007 6:00pm EDT
Chaka Khan
Say the name "Chaka" and most folks in the know instantly think of a woman who has made an indelible and lasting impression on the music scene of the past three decades. First, as the lead singer of the massively successful R&B, funk and pop band Rufus, then as a solo artist in her own right who has influenced an entire generation of female vocalists (think Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Maysa among others). Like Aretha, like Joni, like Tina, a first name will do. For there's only one Chaka, woman of fire, possessed of a powerhouse, unforgettably distinctive trademark vocal style who ...

Cake To Release 'B-Sides And Rarities' This Spring; Live Disc Due In Fall

4/20/2007 8:00pm EDT
Cake formed in Sacramento, California in 1991. The band quickly became a hot item in the downtown club and cafe scene, then went on to gain a steady following in San Francisco's Bay Area. Lead singer John McCrea's unwitting amalgam of Jonathan Richman, David Byrne, and Woody Guthrie, backed by Cake's shambling countrified funk, took Northern California by storm. To date, Cake has toured extensively throughout the world including North and South America, Europe, Australia, and Japan.

After releasing their first album, Motorcade of Generosity independently, the band signed with Capricorn...
