Cut Chemist
Sound of the Police
Release Date 2010 07 27
Label A Stable Sound
Rating:

Performed on one turntable with one mixer that was put through one loop pedal, Sound of the Police is another example of Cut Chemist’s supreme talent and creativity behind the decks -- or deck -- but it’s a fantastic album to groove on as well. The performance captured here comes from a February 2009 kickoff gig for the Mochilla production company’s Timeless series of concerts held in California. The material is primarily from African and South American sources, but hip-hop and a couple of other genres rear their heads, weaving in and out like U.S. radio stations dotted across an Afro-Brazilian dial. Think of Madlib’s Medicine Show mix series and you’ve got an idea of how wonderfully loose it plays, and if you’re lucky enough to find the Chemist’s own &“Adidas to Addis” single, you’ve got an idea of the throwback, world music flavor found here. Everything is sourced from warm, scratchy vinyl and split into two long mixes, which makes for a proper extended experience. While this is a must for fans of Cut Chemist and turntablism in general, anyone with a taste for head-bobbing mixes from unexpected material should be thrilled with the results. David Jeffries, Rovi
