"Music by Ry Cooder, " reads the credit, which means that the brief, eclectic score for this political satire was compiled by Cooder and that he played on much of it, though he is credited or co-credited as a composer on only four of 14 selections, which is the same number of composer credits his son Joachim gets. Both father and son turn in the occasional orchestral piece that sounds like traditional soundtrack music. But there is also Americana in the form of versions of "Camptown Races" and "You Are My Sunshine," as well as Latin sounds from Perez Prado ("Silbando Mambo") and ambient music in "Wide Sky," co-written and performed by trumpeter Jon Hassell. It's appropriate music for a film that ranges from the backwoods to the hustings and from broad comedy to intense melodrama, and like all Ry Cooder scores, it's eminently listenable outside the movie theater.
