J. Cole Debuts Big On Billboard 200

December 18th, 2014 10:21am EST
J. Cole Forest Hills Drive
For J. Cole, the number one spot is a familiar one. For the third time in his career, J. Cole sits atop the Billboard 200. This time, he earns the largest sales of his career as 2014 Forest Hills Drive sold a robust 354,000 copies. Translated to the Billboard 200’s new formula of ‘units’, J. Cole’s latest impacted 375,000. Even more remarkable about J. Cole’s numbers is the lack of a single to drive album sales – “Apparently” was issued upon the album’s release as a single. Initially, the album was forecasted to sell more than 300,000 copies.

So with the debut of J. Cole, Taylor Swif...

J. Cole Is Fiery On ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive’

December 16th, 2014 3:12pm EST
J. Cole Forest Hills Drive
Sometimes the best musicians don’t receive the recognition that they should – call it the ‘underrated bug.’ For rapper J. Cole, being underrated seems to be his middle name. Sure, he’s racked up two number one albums, but the über talented rapper still feels less heralded than some of his contemporaries. 2014 Forest Hills Drive, much like previous effort, Born Sinner, exemplifies why J. Cole ranks among the best in the game.

Following the mysterious “Intro,” “January 28th” finds Cole is on autopilot – cocky and confident from the jump. “The real is back, the 'ville is back,” Cole spi...

Taylor Swift Still Tops On Billboard

December 11th, 2014 10:59am EST
Taylor Swift
The Billboard 200 may be completely revamped, but Taylor Swift’s constant stay atop the chart regardless of changes is unsurprising. After three consecutive weeks, a week in the runner-up slot, and last week’s return to the top, Swift now sits at five weeks at #1. Baller status – yep, definitely – she’s a playmaker. Overall, including overall “consumption” to quote the new chart language, Swift’s impact was 274,000. Again, only a portion of that were sales, specifically 230,000 copies. Regardless of technicalities, Swift rules.

But enough about Taylor, what about the newbies to th...

December 10th, 2014 8:00am EST
J. Cole performs at Made In America concert in Philadelphia Phil
Who has dominated the fall (musically)? Taylor Swift has dominated the fall. While her dominance continues onward towards Christmas, the week of December 9 does have some notable new efforts dropping. The biggest album to watch is one few know little about – J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Can Cole put some pressure on Taylor Swift? It’s possible as he put some pressure on Kanye West in 2013. Cole does indeed lead albums to check out this week, which also includes Carrie Underwood’s greatest hits compilation.

The 51 Best Albums Of 2013 - What Made Your List?

December 30th, 2013 6:00pm EST
Daft Punk
Ranking the very best albums of any year is incredibly difficult; there are always misses. 2013 was filled with some triumphant musical moments, though not all of their parent albums were necessarily ‘worthy’ of being considered the best of the year. Because of various factors, this list has its surprises and like any album reviewed, its triumphs and flaws. One thing’s for sure – the top ten to fifteen albums are pretty close to the cream of the crop from my perspective. Here are the 50 (+1) best albums of 2013!

1) Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City

20 Best Rap Albums Of 2013

December 29th, 2013 9:00am EST
Marshall Mathers LP 2
2013 has been an exceptional year for rap album releases.  Some were hot, while others were far from it – cold as Antarctica. Still overall, there were plenty of releases to be proud of, no questions asked. Below, you’ll find my ‘MIA’ (or called it in) list as well as my top 20 rap albums of 2013. This excludes mixtapes and previously released material FYI.

1) Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2
Aftermath

Eminem set out to prove he’s still the illest MC, epitomized by his vicious performance on the epic “Rap God”.  Ultimately, Eminem accomplishes his task of affirming his ‘god status’, sou...

50 Best Rap Songs Of 2013

December 28th, 2013 1:00pm EST
Kendrick Lamar
Ranking favorites from throughout the year is one of the most time-consuming and arduous things to do.  All of the rap songs on this particular list of rap songs from 2013 all stood out to me in some regard.  Are they ordered correctly – most likely not.  Is there complete analysis of each provided below or even a sound reason why they were selected… um…well now… Basically, provided is a statement of a thought, a reaction, or possibly a reason why I though each song was special.

1) “Blood On The Leaves”

Kanye West

By far, the best track from Yeezus and arguably the be...

Thoughts On The 56th Annual Grammy Nominations

December 9th, 2013 8:50pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Grammys are like a musician’s Super Bowl, even if the nominations and victorious artists are flawed.  I won’t lie to you, I complain every year that someone won a Grammy that didn’t deserve it while someone else was snubbed. Just last year, during the 55th Annual Grammys, I lobbied hard for Frank Ocean (looking back, I have reservations now) while Mumford & Sons walked out with the Album of the Year trophy.  The year that Taylor Swift won for Fearless, my girl Beyoncé was on a roll until the coveted Album of the Year award was read.  You get my position though! This year,  I find myself...

2013 Album Playlist: Favorites, Least Favorites, and Honorable Mentions - Part 1

October 11th, 2013 9:15pm EDT
The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2
As I look over my 2013 playlist from my iPod, I realize I have listened to numerous albums this year.  In fact, the amount of music that my ears have consumed and my pen has analyzed is pretty scary…and I still missed lots of albums! SMH! Some were special, some made me cringe, and some fell somewhere in between the two extremes.  As difficult as it was, as of October 7, 2013, I have compiled a list housing my favorites, least favorites, and honorable mentions.  I’m almost certain I’ve slighted someone and I’m sure there will be continual revisions, but for now, here’s what you should’ve sp...

July 23rd, 2013 3:29pm EDT
Drake
Drake has promised to remove odious lyrics by J. Cole from their new track after causing controversy with a reference to autism.

Last week, the hip-hop tandem came under fire from charity crusaders after releasing Jodeci (Freestyle), in which Cole says, "I'm artistic, you n**gas is autistic, retarded."

The uproar impelled the Miss America singer to write a lengthy apology to those offended by the line, insisting he was "instantly embarrassed" by his choice of words and "should have known better."

Cole added, "To the entire Autism community who expressed outrage, I'm moved and inspired b...

July 22nd, 2013 10:40am EDT
J. Cole
J. Cole has posted a lengthy apology after making a controversial reference to autism in his new collaboration with Drake.

The 28 year-old rapper teamed up with his colleague for new song Jodeci Freestyle, but the track caused indignation due to a line about the disorder.  The lyric reads, "Go check the numbers dummy, that's just me gettin' started/ I'm artistic, you n**gas is autistic, retarded."

Now, he has taken to the web to say sorry to anyone he has offended. In the post, he writes, "In a recent verse on the song 'Jodeci Freestyle', I said something highly offensive to people wit...

Bone Thugs N Harmony
Rappers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are putting their differences aside to reunite and belatedly mark their 20th anniversary at the Rock the Bells festival series this summer.

The Tha Crossroads hit-makers formed in 1991 as a five-piece, but the veteran rappers were reduced to a trio early last year when both Wish Bone and Krayzie Bone walked out of the group to pursue solo endeavors.

Now Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone and Flesh-n-Bone are planning to celebrate their career longevity by coming together to headline the 2012 Rock the Bells hip-hop concerts. They will perform t...
