Lana Del Rey's Album Is Number One In Britain

2/6/2012 9:39am EST
Lana Del Rey
Much-maligned pop star Lana Del Rey has something to smile about three weeks after she was blasted for her performance on "Saturday Night Live" - she has scored a number one album in Britain.

The New Yorker debuted "Born To Die" at the top of the charts on Sunday - one spot ahead of Leonard Cohen's new album "Old Ideas."

The chart news comes a day after Del Rey was defended in a skit on SNL, during which comedienne Kristen Wiig - portraying the singer - attempted to explain her odd performance on the program last month.

Meanwhile, David Guetta's "Titanium" has hit the top of the U.K. sin...

Leonard Cohen Concert Footage Up For Sale

Leonard Cohen
A lawyer has ended a dispute with Leonard Cohen after agreeing to sell off footage of the legendary folk singer shot in the 1970s.

Showbiz attorney Steven Machat is handing over 294 film reels, which follow the Hallelujah singer on stage and behind-the-scenes of his 1972 European tour.

The tapes had been missing since 1980, but Machat rediscovered them in 2009 and they were used to create a documentary about the Canadian rocker, entitled Bird on a Wire.

Now Machat, who once represented Cohen, has settled his feud with the star by offering up the reels to fans for $1,500.

Machat tells Lo...

R.E.M.'s 'Everybody Hurts' Makes Most Men Cry

9/30/2010 12:12pm EDT
R.E.M.'s Everybody Hurts is the song most likely to make men sob, according to a new British survey.

The tune beat Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton's heartfelt tribute to his dead son - to top a new poll conducted by PRS for Music, an organization which collects royalties.

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was third and Sinead O'Connor was the only woman on the list at four with Prince-penned song Nothing Compares 2 U.

Also making the top 10: With or Without You by U2, The Verve's The Drugs Don't Work and Candle in the Wind by Elton John.

Phil Collins Stunned By Hall Of Fame Honor

6/16/2010 10:24pm EDT
Phil Collins
Veteran rocker Phil Collins was left dumbfounded when he learned he would be receiving the Songwriters Hall of Fame's highest honor this year - because he was convinced he was not "qualified."

The former Genesis frontman will be presented with the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, in recognition of his lyrical prowess on classics such as "Against All Odds" and "In the Air Tonight," at a ceremony in New York on Thursday.

Collins admits he was taken aback by the honor - and initially assumed he was simply being called on to present the prize to another artist.

He tells the Associated Press,...

The mother of cult singer Jeff Buckley is convinced her son would have been amused that music mogul Simon Cowell has given him a boost up the pop charts - years after his death.

Fans of the late rocker, who died in a swimming accident in 1997, are campaigning to take his recording of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah to the top of the U.K. charts this Christmas in a bid to beat another cover version of the song by singer Alexandra Burke.

Burke was awarded a $1.5 million record deal with Syco Records, Cowell's division of Sony BMG, when she took home the crown on Cowell's TV competition T...

'So Real: Songs From Jeff Buckley' Is The First Anthology Of The Late Singer

5/7/2007 6:00pm EDT
Jeff Buckley
One of rock's hardest lessons is that the impact of an artist's career is often not measured by the time he spends among us, but rather by the intensity with which his music reverberates after he is gone. Jeff Buckley yielded one original studio album on Columbia Records during his lifetime, the impossibly glorious Grace, released in the summer of 1994. It made its way onto many a fan and critic's list as one of the most important recordings of the '90s.

Buckley's "lamentably brief career," as it has been characterized by his mother, Mary Guibert, came to a tragic and untimely end on...

Leonard Cohen's 40th Anniversary As A Columbia Artist Celebrated In 2007

3/20/2007 12:37pm EDT
Leonard Cohen
"Cohen, who was born in Montreal in 1934, was 33 years old when Songs of Leonard Cohen came out, old enough to embrace the creative momentum of the '60s counterculture without falling prey to its more naïve aspects. He had also been a published poet for more than ten years, and a novelist as well." - from the new liner notes written by Anthony DeCurtis

Like the ancient scriptures themselves, whose parables and lessons have always inspired the poetry and songwriting of 72-year old Leonard Cohen, the verses and cadences of his first trilogy of Columbia albums recorded between 1967 and ...

Check Out New Artist Stephen Fretwell

6/5/2006 10:30pm EDT
At the ripe old age of 23, and signed to Fiction Records, Stephen Fretwell has released his first album, 'Magpie.' The album was recorded in Abbey Road studios, London, during what Fretwell describes as the one of the most amazing times in his life. Rather than being overawed by the studio's illustrious history though, it seems to have spurred Stephen to his finest work yet. There are flavours of [Bob]Dylan (of course), The Beatles, [Leonard]Cohen, even jazz and swing in Stephen's songs, but a melodic sensibility that seems to come from somewhere supernatural and the total individuality of ...
