The governor of New Jersey has defended his decision to lower flags to half-mast on Saturday to mark state native Whitney Houston's funeral, following a backlash from residents.

Governor Chris Christie ordered flags on state government buildings to be lowered when the singing legend is laid to rest at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she sang as a child.

Several residents have gone online to complain about Governor Christie's decision, insisting a star with Houston's past drug problems should not warrant such a mark of respect.

Bruce Springsteen is to headline the 2012 Isle of Wight festival in Britain.

The Boss and his E Street Band announced plans for a major world tour in 2012 on Monday and now date details are beginning to emerge.

Springsteen will perform at the final night of the Isle of Wight festival and he'll also hit the stage at London's Hard Rock Calling event next summer. He'll also play two UK stadium shows next June.

Bruce Springsteen has paid tribute to his "great friend" Clarence Clemons after the legendary saxophonist died on Saturday at the age of 69.

Clarence Clemons has died at the age of 69.

The world-renowned saxophonist recently suffered a major stroke and had initially reacted well to treatment but sadly passed away on Saturday.

As well as enjoying a successful solo career, Clemons was a regular in Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band and had also tried his hand at acting, appearing in TV drama The Wire.

He recently collaborated with Lady Gaga on the track "The Edge of Glory" from her latest album "Born This Way."

Bruce Springsteen's longtime saxophonist in the E Street Band has suffered a stroke, according to reports.

Clarence Clemons fell sick at his home in Florida on Sunday, reports Showbiz411.com. No further information about the star's condition is known as WENN went to press.

The news comes just days after Clemons, who performed with Lady Gaga on the recent American Idol season finale, pulled out of plans to play the U.S. National Anthem at the NBA (National Basketball Association) Finals last week due to a hand injury.
