Cheap TrickTrick or Treat Release Date: 1977 10 31 Label: Impossible Records Rating: ![]() |
In the late '70s, some of Cheap Trick's more hardcore fans didn't wait until the release of 1979's Live at Budokan to acquire live recordings by the Midwestern power popsters -- they took advantage of the various bootlegs that were available in the underground market. The sound quality of Cheap Trick's late '70s bootleg LPs varied considerably; some sounded awful, some sounded great. One of the finest Cheap Trick bootlegs from that period is Trick or Treat, which documents an October 31, 1977, show in the band's home town of Rockford, Illinois. The sound quality is excellent -- this is obviously a soundboard recording -- and Cheap Trick's set is equally impressive. Providing a combination of songs from 1976's Cheap Trick and 1977's In Color, the band cranks up the volume and favors a tough, forceful approach. But as aggressively as these performances rock, the band never loses its pop sensibilities. In fact, Cheap Trick's spirited Halloween performances of "Oh Candy," "Come on, Come On," "I Want You to Want Me," and "Southern Girls" are the essence of power pop. This LP isn't the least bit disappointing. Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
