June Carter Cash
Making of Wildwood Flower Radio Special
Release Date: 2003
Label: Dualtone Music
Rating:

The Wildwood Flower Radio Special is a documentary program as well as a memorial to the life and music of June Carter Cash. While other members of the extensive Carter Family continue to make music, June Carter was probably the last, best-known connection to country music's founding family. Although she usually played a subordinate musical role to her husband, Johnny Cash, in 2003 Dualtone released Wildwood Flower. The well-received album took on a special significance following the deaths of both June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash in 2003. The Making of Wildwood Flower Radio Special is narrated by their son, John Carter Cash, and includes interviews with the participants, family, and friends along with snatches of the album's songs. The disc provides lots of fun background on familiar fare like "Keep on the Sunny Side," "Storms Are on the Ocean," and "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?," all old Carter Family favorites. There's also a fine version of "Sinking in the Lonesome Sea" and an odd original called "Big Yellow Peaches." Material gathered from interviews also reveals June Carter Cash's outlandish sense of humor, especially evident on her bizarre story about Lee Marvin. Fans of both June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash will enjoy this intimate look at America's most prominent country music family. Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., All Music Guide
