Thoughts On The 56th Annual Grammy Nominations

December 9th, 2013 8:50pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Grammys are like a musician’s Super Bowl, even if the nominations and victorious artists are flawed.  I won’t lie to you, I complain every year that someone won a Grammy that didn’t deserve it while someone else was snubbed. Just last year, during the 55th Annual Grammys, I lobbied hard for Frank Ocean (looking back, I have reservations now) while Mumford & Sons walked out with the Album of the Year trophy.  The year that Taylor Swift won for Fearless, my girl Beyoncé was on a roll until the coveted Album of the Year award was read.  You get my position though! This year,  I find myself...

2010 Grammy Awards Fashion (Photos)

February 1st, 2010 12:10pm EST
2010 Grammy Awards Fashion
Gold and beige were hot colors at last night's Grammy Awards. Beyonce looked fantastic in a form-fitting Stephanie Rolland gown, while Katy Perry wore the same shade in a dress by Zac Posen, complete with gold flowers. Sexy "Tik Tok" pop star Ke$ha wore a flirty gold fringed dress. Carrie Underwood took the stage in a strapless gold gown but wore a white dress with an asymmetrical neckline on the red carpet.

Fergie stood out in her electric blue and gold dress, which had a hint of Egyptian flare. Taylor Swift was one of our top picks of the night in a blue sparkly floor-length Kaufman F...

'This Is Next' Compilation Series To Highlight The Best Music From Independent Artists

August 27th, 2007 8:05pm EDT
This Is NEXT
This Is NEXT is a new compilation series showcasing today's best independent artists. Based on the model of the popular NOW That's What I Call Music series and inspired by the success of 2004's Garden State soundtrack (which largely featured independent artists and sold over 1 million units), This Is NEXT will be curated biannually by a different label in the ADA stable.

ADA president Andy Allen sums the compilation's relevance best by saying, "Indie music has entered the mainstream. Hollywood and Madison Avenue are increasingly using tracks from indie artists in their projects, and yo...

2006: Year In Music (Pt. 1)

December 31st, 2006 12:00pm EST
Arctic Monkeys
From Arctic Monkeys to Zutons to Britney's divorce to the most overplayed song of the year (hint: it's not James Blunt's You're Beautiful), 2006 was unmatched in musical diversity. There were albums we didn't even realize came out and artists we didn't even realize were still around. There were reunions and breakups too. Here's a brief summary of 2006: The Year in Music...

The new year kicked off somewhat quietly; however, it was the debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, from the Arctic Monkeys, the band that U.S. critics bashed despite storming to the top of the...

March 29th, 2006 2:56pm EST
Neko Case
After debuting at #54 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart earlier this month, on sales of more than 18,000 copies - her strongest single-week tally ever by a factor of five - Neko Case’s album ‘Fox Confessor Brings The Flood’ (Anti-) is racking up some impressive critical numbers as well. The popular review-tracking website Metacritic.com gives ‘Fox Confessor’ a cumulative score of 85, making it one of the highest rated albums to date this year.

Only four releases have reached the 85 benchmark in 2006. Metacritic bases their scores on a weighted average of reviews for a specific rele...

Neko Case Talks About Her New Album

November 23rd, 2005 10:29am EST
Neko Case
"I've given up on typical song structure," says Neko Case, reflecting on the twelve new songs on her ambitious, riveting new album 'Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" (due March 7 on Anti- Records). "I want to say what I have to say and then get out." But a close listen will reveal that Case hasn't so much given up on the typical verse-chorus-verse construct as transcended it, creating a majestic album that resonates more deeply with each listen.

"With this album," Neko Case reflects, "I wanted to try and figure out how fairy tales were born." But 'Fox Confessor' doesn't dissect the form;...
