The Cardigans are a Swedish rock band who hail from Jönköping, Sweden and were formed in 1992 by Peter Svensson and Magnus Sveningsson. The duo recruited drummer Bengt Lagerberg, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson, and lead singer Nina Persson to round out the group. The band began working on a demo instantly and sent it to A&R rep, Ola Hermanson at Trampolene Records. The band was signed and their debut album “Emmerdale” was released in 1994, to rave reviews in their home town. The band then embarked on a European tour and developed a local following almost instantly. Their second offering, “Life” appeared in 1995 and changed the band's public status; they became an international hit almost overnight, with the album selling a million copies and turning platinum.

The success that “Life,” created brought an offer from Mercury Records for The Cardigans. They signed with the label and released “First Band on the Moon” (1996), which spawned the single, “Lovefool,” that was featured in Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film “Romeo and Juliet,” exposing the band to a wider audience. The album turned gold in the U.S., and “Lovefool” was a huge hit. 1998 saw the band release “Gran Turismo,” and then go on a hiatus for a few years, with the band members pursuing other projects. The band re-surfaced in 2003 with “Long Gone Before Daylight,” which went on to become one of best-selling albums in Sweden. However, the reviews were mixed as the band changed musical direction and began to incorporate an Americana/grass-roots feel into their music. A year later the band hit the road again with Liz Phair, Katy Rose, and Charlotte Martin on the 'Chicks With Attitude tour.'

2005 marked the release of the band's sixth album, “Super Extra Gravity.” The album peaked at #1 on the Swedish Album Chart and turned gold. In 2012 The Cardigans announced that they will be part of the Sonic Rock Festival in Tokyo and Osaka in the summer of 2012. The band is currently working on new material together.
