Cab Calloway & Lena Horne
Stormy Weather
Release Date: 1995 11 14
Label: Sandy Hook
Rating:

Stormy Weather was one of the first major black musicals to be widely distributed in theaters, with an all-star cast including bandleaders Cab Calloway and Fats Waller, tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and singer Lena Horne. Although Horne and Calloway got the lion's share of screen time and vocal features, Waller easily stole the film as he mugged his way through his hit "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Moppin' and Boppin'," which features bassist Slam Stewart singing and bowing in octave unison. A total of ten selections from the movie are heard on this Sandy Hook LP. The Waller tracks easily eclipse Horne's so-so interpretations of the title track and "Digga Digga Do," as well as her duets with Calloway and his vocal features ("Jumpin' Jive," "Lonesome Blues," and "Sunday in Savannah"). For those who don't have a video of the film itself, this LP is an acceptable substitute. Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
