Byther Smith was born April 17, 1933, in Monticello, Mississippi, and is blues musician. Smith's unique gritty style and uncompromising delivery is a trademark that his work had come to be known by. Smith was born into a large family, who moved to Chicago in the mid-1950s. From an early age his passion was music; playing bass for a three-piece jazz combo and rhythm guitar for Otis Rush. He has also backed Junior Wells, Big Mama Thornton and George "Harmonica" Smith. During the 1960s, Smith began to focus more so on the guitar and learned a great deal from his cousin, J. B.
