Bronski Beat were a British synthpop trio who achieved success in the mid 1980s, particularly with the 1984 hit "Smalltown Boy,” which rose to the top Billboard's U.S. Singles Chart and peaked at #3 in the U.K. Pop Chart. Jimmy Sommerville was the charismatic Scottish lead singer of Bronski Beat, who was openly gay and incorporated some of the issues that he had encountered growing up in working-class Glasgow, Scotland, into his lyrics. At the height of their popularity the band consisted of Somerville, Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek, both of whom played keyboards and percussion.
